However, questions exist as to whether high radiant flux exposure results can be extrapolated to in-service exposure levels. Based on the reciprocity law, the photoresponse of a material is dependent only on the total energy to which the specimen is exposed, and is independent of the exposure time and the intensity of the radiation taken separately. An experiment to validate the applicability of the reciprocity law for polymeric coatings has been carried out using the NIST integrating sphere-based ultraviolet (UV) weathering device. A nonpigmented, non-UV stabilized acrylicmelamine coating was exposed to six different UV radiation intensities ranging from 36 W/m2 to 322 W/m2, and in the spectral region between 290 nm and 400 nm. Chemical changes in the coating due to UV exposure were measured with transmission Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy and UV-visible spectroscopy. Using two dose-damage models, the reciprocity law photo response for this polymeric system was verified for different photodegradation mechanisms, including chain scission, oxidation, and mass loss. We have performed a systematic study of the incorporation of methacrylic acid (MAA) within styrene/butyl acrylate copolymer seed latices, and determined the eventual effect on the morphology of the composite particles when using a second-stage monomer that is either polar (MMA) or nonpolar (BMA). These latices have been produced in batch and semibatch reactions in the pH range of 3-7. At low pH, the MAA groups are not ionized, but at the higher pH they may be nearly completely ionized. Here, we report that for batch reactions carried out within the above pH range, the latex particle morphologies of the PMMA second-stage systems change dramatically with increasing pH, while those for the PBMA system do not change at all. These results show that one cannot easily generalize the effect of acid comonomers on the morphology of composite latex particles, as this depends upon the choice of the copolymers in the latex and the process characteristics of the polymerization reaction. Glycidyl carbamate functional oligomers were synthesized by the reaction of poly functional isocyanate oligomers and glycidol. The oligomers were formulated into coatings with several amine functional crosslinkers at varying stoichiometric ratios and cured at different temperatures. Properties such as solvent resistance, hardness, and impact resistance were dependent on the composition and cure conditions. Most coatings had an excellent combination of properties. Studies were carried out to determine the kinetics of the curing reaction of the glycidyl carbamate functional oligomers with multifunctional and model amines. Detailed kinetic analysis of the curing reactions was also undertaken. The results indicated that the glycidyl carbamate functional group is more reactive than a glycidyl ether group. Oxygen transport characteristics were also studied using the half-time method. The photooxidation versus depth profile was highly dependant on the presence of hindered amine light stabilizers (HALS) for both coating systems. Ultraviolet light absorbers (UVA) had little effect on the photooxidation profile. A photooxidation gradient was formed in both clearcoats due to a reduction in oxygen solubility when compared to standard thermoset clearcoats. This gradient was only seen in formulations not containing HALS. The New Zealand site had a climatic index 50% more challenging. Significant differences in performance relating to coating, species, site, and exposure are presented. The coating and site had the most significant effects, while species had the least. A solvent-borne stain and a hybrid paint qualified for stable end-use situations in both countries. An acrylic paint performed better in Germany while an alkyd gave the poorest performance of the four coatings tested. More effective fungicidal coating properties are required in New Zealand to suppress mold growth. Areas of deficiency for internationalizing the European weathering standard EN 927 are discussed. Measurements were made from samples prepared in an essentially CO2-free, H2O-free glove box and from samples prepared in ambient conditions. For those prepared in a CO2-free glove box, AFM imaging was conducted on (1) an unexposed air/coating surface, (2) an unexposed coating bulk, (3) an unexposed coating/substrate interface, and (4) a field exposed air/coating surface. For samples prepared in ambient conditions, only the unexposed air/coating surface was investigated. The same regions of the exposed samples were scanned periodically by the AFM to monitor changes in the surface morphology of the coating as UV exposure progressed. Small angle neutron scattering and Fourier transfonn infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) studies were performed to verify the microstructure and to follow chemical changes during outdoor exposure, respectively. The results have shown that amine blushing, which occurs only under ambient conditions, had a significant effect on the surface morphology and microstructure of the epoxy. The surface morphology of the samples prepared under CO2-free, dry conditions was generally smooth and homogeneous. However, the interface and the bulk samples clearly revealed a two-phase structure consisting of bright nodular domains and dark interstitial regions, indicating an inhomogeneous microstructure. Such heterogeneous structure of the bulk was in good agreement with results obtained by small angle neutron scattering of unexposed samples and by AFM phase imaging of the degraded sample surface. The relationship between submicrometer physical changes and molecular chemical degradation is discussed. The addition of plasticizer results in a decrease in the glass transition temperature and a change in the mechanical properties. Different tests were carried out to the optimum percentage of plasticizer content (1.5-3% weight ratio to epoxy resin) required to obtain the maximum anticorrosion performance of the epoxy primer. These changes are explained by the structural-kinetic effect exerted by the plasticizer on the chemical crosslinking in the course of the epoxy network synthesis and the increase in the excess free volume. The composite films were prepared from pyrene (P)-labeled PS particles and SNaM clay at room temperature and annealed at elevated temperatures in 10-min intervals above glass transition temperature (Tq) of polystyrene. During the annealing processes, the transparency of the film improved considerably. Scattered light (IS) and fluorescence intensity (IP) from P were measured after each annealing step to monitor the stages of film formation. Evolution of transparency of composite films was monitored by using photon transmission intensity, Itr. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) was used to detect the variation in physical structure of annealed composite films. Minimum film formation temperature, T0' and healing temperatures, Th' were determined. Void closure and interdiffusion stages were modeled and related activation energies were determined. It was observed that both activation energies increased as the percent of SNaM was increased in composite films. Chitosan-hybridized acrylic emulsions were prepared by two methods. To produce stable chitosan-hybridized acrylic emulsions, the pre-emulsion dropping method is superior to the monomer dropping method. The adsorption performances for formaldehyde in chitosan-hybridized acrylic resin films increased with increasing chitosan contents; the films also had adsorption abilities for hydrogen sulfide and ammonia. Tensile strengths and elongation at breaking points decreased with increasing chitosan contents. Interior finishing coatings made from chitosan-hybridized acrylic resin emulsions have the qualities necessary for an interior finishing coating and showed excellent adsorption abilities for formaldehyde.
