In order to study fundamental properties of such polymers, a model system of four polyurethane macromonomers that differ in the average number of double bonds per molecule was developed. Free radical copolymerization of the polyurethane macromonomers with acrylates was carried out in aqueous phase using the polyurethanes as the reactive emulsifier. The stability of the product dispersions depends on the average number of double bonds per macromolecule and the weight ratio of hydrophilic polyurethane to the acrylic part. The content of the polyurethane double bonds and their conversion was measured by nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy and by a titrimetrical method. The viscosity of the polyesters was dependent on the structures of diols. The viscosity of polyesters is lower with the diol HD, intermediate with BEPD and HPHP, and higher with the diols CHDM and NPG. The polyesters were crosslinked with hexamethylene diisocyanate isocyanurate (HDI isocyanurate) affording polyurethane coatings. The mechanical properties, tensile properties, fracture toughness, and viscoelastic properties were investigated for the polyurethane films with five different diols. The cyclohexyl structure of the CHDM provides the polyurethane with rigidity which is manifested in high tensile modulus, hardness, and fracture toughness. In contrast, the linear diol, 1,6-hexanediol provides polyurethane with very high flexibility, but these coatings suffer with respect to low hardness and tensile modulus. During crosslinking, polyurea (PUA) is produced, and its concentration levels near the F-S interface are diminished for unpigmented coatings, whereas for the same system containing carbon black, the PUA formation is enhanced. Although the presence of carbon black particles at the F-S interface results in diminished adhesion of 2K PUR to acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene (ABS), adhesion is also affected by the presence of OH and C=O functionalities on ABS, which are potential sites for H- bonding to PUR. Stronger hydrogen donor affinity of N-H functionalities in PUA as compared to the N-H groups on PUR leads to increased H-bonding in the presence of carbon black. Enhanced intermolecular H-bonding in PUR due to the presence of carbon black particles competes with the F-S interfacial H-bonding that promotes adhesion. This paper discussed an experimental study to develop a two-component water-reducible polyurethane coating using a tertiary aliphatic polyisocyanete crosslinker with dry times, appearance, and reactivity equivalent to a two-component solventborne system. The effects of acrylic polyol monomer composition, glass transition temperature (Tg), and hydroxyl concentration on drytime and ambient cure film performance have been determined. The effects of particle size distribution of the formulated coating on performance were examined. It was found that smaller particle size provides overall improved film propertics, i.e., jaster dry time, increased hardness, and faster development of solvent resistance. The relationship of both acrylic polyol composition and formulation variables on the particle size distribution are discussed. In the model coal tar components, naphthalene, quinoline, 2-naphthol, and phenanthrene showed good compatibility with polyurethane. To test their heavy duty anticorrosive properties, tensile adhesion strength of the cured coatings prepared with the compatible model coal tar components was measured, and the change in tensile adhesion strength as a function of time during salt-water spray treatment was measured. We found that the systems compounded with naphthalene, 2-naphthol, and phenanthrene showed good properties in an ordinary state for adhesion strength. However, only the system with 2-naphthol was found to have good properties in the change of tensile adhesion strength as a function of time during salt-water spray treatment. The curing time of the system with 2-naphthol was slower than that of the others, i.e., we found an inverse proportion between curing speed and adhesion durability. We also measured the dynamic viscoelasticity of cured coatings. We found that a tan delta curve of the system with 2-naphthol shifted towards a low temperature side and the tan delta at the temperature at which adhesion strength was measured was larger than that of the others. We hypothesized that the reason for the tan delta shift was a result of the decrease in crosslinking density because 2-naphthol partially capped the isocyanate group. Considering these results, we hypothesized that one of the reasons why the adhesion properties of the system with 2-naphthol had improved was due to the increase of tan delta.
