We have performed a systematic study of the incorporation of methacrylic acid (MAA) within styrene/butyl acrylate copolymer seed latices, and determined the eventual effect on the morphology of the composite particles when using a second-stage monomer that is either polar (MMA) or nonpolar (BMA). These latices have been produced in batch and semibatch reactions in the pH range of 3-7. At low pH, the MAA groups are not ionized, but at the higher pH they may be nearly completely ionized. Here, we report that for batch reactions carried out within the above pH range, the latex particle morphologies of the PMMA second-stage systems change dramatically with increasing pH, while those for the PBMA system do not change at all. These results show that one cannot easily generalize the effect of acid comonomers on the morphology of composite latex particles, as this depends upon the choice of the copolymers in the latex and the process characteristics of the polymerization reaction. This necesitated a look at the renewable natural resources that can serve as alternative feddstock of monomers for the polymer industry. In this respect, cashew nut shell liquid (CNSL), an abundant agricultural byproduct, holds considerable promise as a source of unsaturated phenol, an excellent monomer for polymer production. Cardanol, a major constituent of CNSL, can be used for the preparation of cardanol-based novolac/resoleresins. The cardanol-based novolac resins can further be epoxidezed with epichlorohydrin resulting in epoxidized novolac resins. therefore, in the first part of the paper, extraction of cardanol from CNSL, development of novolac resins and epoxidized novolac resin sfrom cardanol or modified products from CNSL or cardanol and various application sectors which utilize modified cardanol-based products is reviewed. The molar ratios taken with respect to cardanol to formaldehyde were 1:0.6, 1:0.7, 1:0.8 and 1:0.9. These resins were characterized by I.R. spectroscopy for determining respective functional groups in the resin structure, and Gel Permeation Chromatography (GPC) was used to determine the molecular weights of the prepared novolac resins. These resins were found to possess ortho-ortho and ortho-para linkages. The curing characteristics of the resins showed that the resin prepared with molar ratio 1:0.8 has good curing characteristics.
