Hindered amine light stabilizers in pigmented coatings / Christian Schaller in JOURNAL OF COATINGS TECHNOLOGY AND RESEARCH, Vol. 6, N° 1 (03/2009)

The ratio of UVA and HALS strongly depends on the concentration of pigments (acting as UVA) used in the paint; that is, a clearcoatings require higher amounts of UVA, whereas opaque pigmented coatings require higher amounts of HALS. Here, especially basic HALS types can interfere with paint components like, for example, pigments due to acid/base interactions. In this article, we want to discuss the influence of HALS basicity on long-term performance in opaque white pigmented solventborne (SB) and waterborne (WB) coatings for industrial applications in correlation to the quality of the used TiO2. Unfortunately, advanced epoxy resins require formulation with large quantities of solvent that make attainment of modern VOC regulations difficult or impossible. Coatings formulated from low molecular weight liquid epoxy resin, on the other hand, can easier meet VOC challenges, but dry slowly and tend to be brittle. This presentation explores the concept of using fast reacting, di-functional amine chain extenders to generate epoxy oligomers in situ as a means to meet these opposing property demands. Methylamine-terminated poly-(N-methylazetidine) (pNMAz, 1) is prepared in a two-step process involving the Michael addition of methylamine to acrylonitrile, followed by hydrogenation in a methylamine-containing atmosphere to yield an oligomer stream with an [M.sub.n] of about 250. Competitive pseudo-first-order kinetic measurements conducted in isopropyl alcohol indicate methyl-substituted disecondary diamines reacted approximately 3 to 3.6 times faster with phenyl glycidyl ether (PGE) than the primary amine meta-xylylenediamine (MXDA). These chain extenders can be formulated with traditional multi-functional amine crosslinkers to yield coatings with lower VOC, faster dry speed, and better flexibility compared to corresponding coatings formulated without the chain extender. Measurements were made from samples prepared in an essentially CO2-free, H2O-free glove box and from samples prepared in ambient conditions. For those prepared in a CO2-free glove box, AFM imaging was conducted on (1) an unexposed air/coating surface, (2) an unexposed coating bulk, (3) an unexposed coating/substrate interface, and (4) a field exposed air/coating surface. For samples prepared in ambient conditions, only the unexposed air/coating surface was investigated. The same regions of the exposed samples were scanned periodically by the AFM to monitor changes in the surface morphology of the coating as UV exposure progressed. Small angle neutron scattering and Fourier transfonn infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) studies were performed to verify the microstructure and to follow chemical changes during outdoor exposure, respectively. The results have shown that amine blushing, which occurs only under ambient conditions, had a significant effect on the surface morphology and microstructure of the epoxy. The surface morphology of the samples prepared under CO2-free, dry conditions was generally smooth and homogeneous. However, the interface and the bulk samples clearly revealed a two-phase structure consisting of bright nodular domains and dark interstitial regions, indicating an inhomogeneous microstructure. Such heterogeneous structure of the bulk was in good agreement with results obtained by small angle neutron scattering of unexposed samples and by AFM phase imaging of the degraded sample surface. The relationship between submicrometer physical changes and molecular chemical degradation is discussed. This molecule is unique in that it combines the high base strength of an amine with the low volatility of a dispersant and wetting agent. The application of this chemistry and the resulting improvement in performance properties and cost benefits will be presented.
