The resulting coatings were clear and their mechanical properties were tested by the Sward hardness test, cross-hatch tape adhesion test and MEK double rub test. The new initiators have the advantage of good solubility, high reactivity, and the production of colorless coatings. The best formulations obtained contain 50% ESO, 50% UVR6110, and 0.5% silwet if sulfonium gallate is used as initiator, and 60% ESO, 40% UVR6110, and 0.5% silwet if iodonium gallate is the initiator. The different stages of mass loss for acrylic/melamine-crosslinked clearcoats modeled after those used in high performance automotive coating systems were explored as a function of exposure time/conditions. Two approaches were used. Transmission mode IR experiments were conducted to monitor mass loss in isolated clearcoats. OM was used to monitor mass loss in clearcoats that are part of actual multilayered coating systems. UV-screener (UVA) permanence and interphase mixing (i.e., between clearcoat and basecoat layers) as well as general chemistry depth profiling studies of model acrylic/melamine-crosslinked and acrylic/melamine+silane-crosslinked clearcoats were done as a function of system preparation and exposure time/conditions. UVA depth profiles were obtained using slab microtomy sectioning co-planar to the surface, followed by solvent extraction and UV-VIS solution analysis to monitor UVA content as a function of section mass and thickness. General chemistry depth profiles were obtained using slab microtomy sectioning (as mentioned previously), followed by ATR (IR) analysis to monitor changes in the photooxidation index balues and the spectral envelop in the 2600-3800 cm-1 range. The approaches described herein de not require expertise/equipment that is available to only a few, thus increasing the potential utility of such tools. Three damage indices, related to temperature changes, humidity changes, and time of wetness, respectively, were introduced to quantify adverse effects of climate. The variation of these indices was investigated for a hot and humia climate (Miami, FL) and a hot and dry climate (Phoenix, AZ). In addition, the relative effects of solar radiation, surface wetting by rain and dew condensation, and variations in outdoor tempera ture and relative humidity on the three damage indices were investigated. In this study, the coating structure of a solvent-based polyurethane was analyzed to establish correlations between the intrinsic spatial scaling properties of the coating and UV exposure time. Atomic force microscopy and laser scanning confocal microscopy were employed to map surface structures over a range of scales from 80 nm to 80 mm. The roughness of the polyurethane surface was characterized in terms of scaling exponents using detrended fluctuation analysis to identify long-range, power law relations, and to correct for inhomogeneities in the surface structure. The time-dependence of the roughening process was also determined and correlated with changes in gloss. Permalink : https://e-campus.itech.fr/pmb/opac_css/index.php?lvl=notice_display&id=5581

Oxygen transport characteristics were also studied using the half-time method. The photooxidation versus depth profile was highly dependant on the presence of hindered amine light stabilizers (HALS) for both coating systems. Ultraviolet light absorbers (UVA) had little effect on the photooxidation profile. A photooxidation gradient was formed in both clearcoats due to a reduction in oxygen solubility when compared to standard thermoset clearcoats. This gradient was only seen in formulations not containing HALS.
