Résumé : Aircraft and rotorcraft parts made from high-performance composite materials are superior to earlier generation metals due to their increased strength, reduced weight, and increased service life. For these reasons, most aircraft part designers choose to create new parts out of carbon-fibre-reinforced plastic despite the challenges involved, namely that the manufacture of CFRP parts is more complex than traditional materials and can therefore make parts more costly to produce. This paper describes the method that Accudyne Systems has created for developing automation equipment to manufacture composite parts economically.

Résumé : Simulation of impacted composite panels and calculation of residual strength after impact is a complex and challenging computational process. Accurate prediction requires the integration of material modelling capability with an explicit finite-element dynamic solution, as well as damage tracking and fracture algorithms. A new computational methodology for assessing impact-related damage and determining residual strength after impact is discussed in this article.

Résumé : Manufacturing with fibre-reinforced thermoplastic materials is challenging and often requires expensive experimental testing. The Institut für Verbundwerkstoffe focused its attention on the complete understanding, explanation and simulation of each manufacturing technique using thermoplastics. These efforts resulted in the theoretical description of processes, updating of existing mathematical models, and development of customized simulation tools.

Résumé : The application of a GRP enclosure manufactured by pultrusion on a new cable-stayed bridge recently built over the River Boyne is reviewed in this paper. The design requirements based upon the UK department of transport standard BD67/96 "Enclosure of Bridges" is discussed along with the requirements for pre-production testing, full traceability of materials, material properties and product testing. Installation of the enclosure on the bridge is also illustrated.
