Chitosan-hybridized acrylic emulsions were prepared by two methods. To produce stable chitosan-hybridized acrylic emulsions, the pre-emulsion dropping method is superior to the monomer dropping method. The adsorption performances for formaldehyde in chitosan-hybridized acrylic resin films increased with increasing chitosan contents; the films also had adsorption abilities for hydrogen sulfide and ammonia. Tensile strengths and elongation at breaking points decreased with increasing chitosan contents. Interior finishing coatings made from chitosan-hybridized acrylic resin emulsions have the qualities necessary for an interior finishing coating and showed excellent adsorption abilities for formaldehyde. Carbamate functional polymers offer many advantages for automotive topcoats, such as outstanding resistance to environmental etching, scratching and marring, humidity, and UV exposure. Hydrophobic carbamate oligomers suitable for crosslinking with standard amino resins were synthesized and formulated into stable one-pack automotive clearcoats with low volatile organic compound (VOC) and excellent physical properties. Because of their unusually steep thermal viscosity curves, these oligomers are particularly adaptable to hot spray techniques that enable coatings in the 85-90% weight solids range to be applied with conventional electrostatic mini-bells. In addition, all individual raw materials utilized in preparing the paints were also tested for their VOCs. There were significant differences between claimed and measured VOCs for both raw materials and finished paints. The measurement error for VOC of finished paints was eight percent. This error increased exponentially as the VOC declined below about 250 g/L, reaching about 200% at VOCs below 50 g/L. The range of error also increased exponentially below about 250 g/L, reaching 1000% below 50 g/L. The major sources of VOC error in all cases ere in the water and nonvolatile determinations. Propellant from an aerosol coating is transferred to a gas collection bag and is then analyzed by GC-FID. The propellant-free liquid paint is then internally standardized with a mixture of C5 to C11 normal alkanes and analyzed on a 50-meter capillary column using solid phase microextraction (SPME) with GC-FID detection. This procedure makes it possible to assign linear retention indexes to virtually all of the individual volatile solvents in the coating with subsequent identification. After identification by SPME, the coating is dispersed in a high boiling solvent, internally standardized with a material not coeluting with the coating solvents, and is then analyzed by direct GC-FID. VOC regulations in California for aerosol coatings products require that the coatings have a reactivity (product weighted maximum incremental reactivity or PWMIR) which is below a designated value. Assignment of PWMIR values to aerosol coatings requires that the amount of each individual volatile component in a coating be known.
