The present review paper therefore covers the recent developments in the synthesis and characterisation of diverse epoxy acrylate oligomers including acrylate capped BPA/novolac epoxy, epoxidised oils and cycloaliphatic epoxy systems. The alkoxysilane, siloxane, adipic acid, fluorinated and phenyl phtalazinone modifications of epoxy diacrylate for obtaining special performance properties have been highlighted. Infrared analysis revealed that chlorine enters only in the main chain by the substitution reaction. The thermal stability was found increasing with the chlorine content. Chlorinated copolymer possessed superior film properties as compared those of the unchlorinated except in terms of flexibility and adhesion. The property of resistance to fire was also introduced in the copolymer on chlorination. Thus, BSBO can initiate free-radical polymerization. To explore the potential for film formation, BSBO was blended with (meth)acrylate monomers and/or prepolymers in different proportions. The monomers were trimethylopropane triacrylate esters (TMPTAE), 1,6-hexanediol dimethacrylate (HDDMA), and isobornyl acrylate (IBOA); the prepolymers were ethoxylated bisphenol A dimethacrylate (EBDMAE), and a hydrophobic aromatic urethane acrylate (HAUA).All blends required a catalyst (cobalt naphthenate) and temperatures of about 100°C to induce crosslinking and film formation. Blends with monomers gave formulations that could be applied with no added solvent, but film properties (pencil hardness, MEK double rub resistance, adhesion, and impact resistance) were not very good. Better film properties were obtained by blending prepolymers with BSBO and TMPTAE; these formulations required solvent for application, but VOC levels as low at 140 g/L were possible. FTIR spectra showed that free radical polymerization of the monomers and prepolymers occurred during film formation. Gel content studies indicated that part of the BSBO is incorporated into the crosslinked film, but a substantial fraction is not chemically bound to the network. The thermal mechanical properties, thermal stability, and mechanical properties of the UV-cured HBP20-A and its blends with aromatic polyurethane acrylate were investigated. The experimental results show that the addition of HBP20-A has a strong effect on the properties of the UV-cured traditional linear polyurethane acrylate films. Poor conversion of the acrylate double bonds (67%) observed at room temperature can be overcome by irradiation at elevated temperatures. At 353 K almost complete conversion is observed, even with reduced photoinitiator content. Single or multiple UV-light flash experiments were performed to simulate technical parameters, e.g., cure speed and number of required UV lamps, with the help of RTIR spectroscopy. The results obtained were confirmed by pilot-scale UV curing experiments: one or, at most, two UV lamps of high intensity are sufficient for the curing process with respect to the double-bond conversion. The coatings based on the polyurethane acrylate dispersion show low sensitivity towards oxygen from air. Moreover, in comparison to UV curing under inert nitrogen atmosphere, a small positive effect on the conversion in the presence of air has been observed, which might be due to the contribution of peroxyl radicals or their decomposition products to curing.
