The low viscosity of epoxidized soybean oil (ESBO), its reactivity, and relatively low cost make it an inexpensive candidate co-resin in cationic thermally cured coatings and inks using blocked acid catalysts. Formulations with up to 40% ESBO in the epoxy resin blend were investigated. Blending of cycloaliphatic resin with 10% ESBO gave a bake coating with the same results as the standard formulation except pencil hardness was one unit lower when cured for 12 min at 120°C with a heat de-blocked catalyst. The hardness of coatings with ESBO is adjustable by changing the epoxy/polyol ratio, using harder polyols and harder epoxy resins. The resulting coatings were clear and their mechanical properties were tested by the Sward hardness test, cross-hatch tape adhesion test and MEK double rub test. The new initiators have the advantage of good solubility, high reactivity, and the production of colorless coatings. The best formulations obtained contain 50% ESO, 50% UVR6110, and 0.5% silwet if sulfonium gallate is used as initiator, and 60% ESO, 40% UVR6110, and 0.5% silwet if iodonium gallate is the initiator. These coatings utilize polyols derived from the renewable resource soybean oil and its simple derivatives. The coating is autocatalytic and does not require continuous exposure to moisture for the development of full properties. A series of soybean oil-based polyols were synthesized by treating either the raw oil or epoxidized soybean oil (ESO) by a variety of reagents including long chain fatty acids. In a series of model reactions the abovepolyols were reacted with various diisocyanate compounds, at molar ratio of NCO/OH=1.5:1-3:1 to obtain prepolymers with residual NCO% of around 1.8. The isocyanate-free moisture curable resin was obtained by capping the prepolymer with of aminosilane followed by the addition of a small amount of methanol. Typical clearcoat formulations become tack-free in less than an hour, recoatable in about one hour, and reach a functional cure stage in 24 hr at 40% RH and 25°C. Thus, BSBO can initiate free-radical polymerization. To explore the potential for film formation, BSBO was blended with (meth)acrylate monomers and/or prepolymers in different proportions. The monomers were trimethylopropane triacrylate esters (TMPTAE), 1,6-hexanediol dimethacrylate (HDDMA), and isobornyl acrylate (IBOA); the prepolymers were ethoxylated bisphenol A dimethacrylate (EBDMAE), and a hydrophobic aromatic urethane acrylate (HAUA).All blends required a catalyst (cobalt naphthenate) and temperatures of about 100°C to induce crosslinking and film formation. Blends with monomers gave formulations that could be applied with no added solvent, but film properties (pencil hardness, MEK double rub resistance, adhesion, and impact resistance) were not very good. Better film properties were obtained by blending prepolymers with BSBO and TMPTAE; these formulations required solvent for application, but VOC levels as low at 140 g/L were possible. FTIR spectra showed that free radical polymerization of the monomers and prepolymers occurred during film formation. Gel content studies indicated that part of the BSBO is incorporated into the crosslinked film, but a substantial fraction is not chemically bound to the network.
