One often specifies, therefore, that the surface of the substrate be pretreated. Pretreatment methods can vary, from oxidation of the surface, e.g., plasma or flame, to diffusion and mechanical interlocking of an applied polymer with the surface. Mechanical interlocking with the nonpolar TPO surface can be achieved through the use of an adhesion promoter, namely a chlorinated poly(olefin) (CPO). The type of CPO utilized, in addition to the types of solvents and heat treatments utilized, can substantially influence the degree of adhesion/cohesion obtained within the CPO/TPO system. This article reviews the factors influencing the adhesion/cohesion of painted TPO substrates. Heat histories, TPO molding variations, CPO types, including solvent and resin variations, and topcoat (basecoat/clearcoat) chemistries are all found to influence the adhesion/cohesion of the painted TPO assembly (herein termed composite). Once adhesion of a topcoat system to the TPO substrate is achieved, however, the durability of that system to external forces is in question. External forces acting upon the painted composite, e.g., compressive stresses, tensile stresses, and single and/or multiple impact forces, can lead to devastating consequences. Chip or impact resistance and scratch or compressive/tensile (gouge) damage resistance can be affected by the choice of topcoat chemistries utilized. Topcoat frictional behavior, tensile strengths, and surface hardness were all determined to be influential factors in providing robust damage resistance to the painted composite. Chitosan-hybridized acrylic emulsions were prepared by two methods. To produce stable chitosan-hybridized acrylic emulsions, the pre-emulsion dropping method is superior to the monomer dropping method. The adsorption performances for formaldehyde in chitosan-hybridized acrylic resin films increased with increasing chitosan contents; the films also had adsorption abilities for hydrogen sulfide and ammonia. Tensile strengths and elongation at breaking points decreased with increasing chitosan contents. Interior finishing coatings made from chitosan-hybridized acrylic resin emulsions have the qualities necessary for an interior finishing coating and showed excellent adsorption abilities for formaldehyde. Effect of pigment concentrations and dispersing agents on various color properties of the molded specimens, such as reflectance versus wavelength characteristics, angular dependency, K/S data, and flop index were evaluated using the CIE system with goniospectrophotometer. Surface image analysis was also conducted. Based on the above parameters, design equations were developed. The study revealed that the effective concentration of the interference pigment was 0.5% and better color characteristics were found when poly (ethylene glycol) was used as a dispersing agent. The addition of plasticizer results in a decrease in the glass transition temperature and a change in the mechanical properties. Different tests were carried out to the optimum percentage of plasticizer content (1.5-3% weight ratio to epoxy resin) required to obtain the maximum anticorrosion performance of the epoxy primer. These changes are explained by the structural-kinetic effect exerted by the plasticizer on the chemical crosslinking in the course of the epoxy network synthesis and the increase in the excess free volume. In the model coal tar components, naphthalene, quinoline, 2-naphthol, and phenanthrene showed good compatibility with polyurethane. To test their heavy duty anticorrosive properties, tensile adhesion strength of the cured coatings prepared with the compatible model coal tar components was measured, and the change in tensile adhesion strength as a function of time during salt-water spray treatment was measured. We found that the systems compounded with naphthalene, 2-naphthol, and phenanthrene showed good properties in an ordinary state for adhesion strength. However, only the system with 2-naphthol was found to have good properties in the change of tensile adhesion strength as a function of time during salt-water spray treatment. The curing time of the system with 2-naphthol was slower than that of the others, i.e., we found an inverse proportion between curing speed and adhesion durability. We also measured the dynamic viscoelasticity of cured coatings. We found that a tan delta curve of the system with 2-naphthol shifted towards a low temperature side and the tan delta at the temperature at which adhesion strength was measured was larger than that of the others. We hypothesized that the reason for the tan delta shift was a result of the decrease in crosslinking density because 2-naphthol partially capped the isocyanate group. Considering these results, we hypothesized that one of the reasons why the adhesion properties of the system with 2-naphthol had improved was due to the increase of tan delta.
