The present review paper therefore covers the recent developments in the synthesis and characterisation of diverse epoxy acrylate oligomers including acrylate capped BPA/novolac epoxy, epoxidised oils and cycloaliphatic epoxy systems. The alkoxysilane, siloxane, adipic acid, fluorinated and phenyl phtalazinone modifications of epoxy diacrylate for obtaining special performance properties have been highlighted. The scanning electron micrographs indicate that the polymethyl methacrylate anchors on the surfaces of the particle homogeneously. Polymer treated a-FeOOH particles can be easily dispersed in organic medium to form a stable colloid and have an imporoved heat resistance. The modified pigment dispersion in acrylate coatings gives a stable viscosity after storage. Permalink : https://e-campus.itech.fr/pmb/opac_css/index.php?lvl=notice_display&id=9380

Anecdotal evidence suggests that under "harsh" (high temperature and velocity) dehydration conditions, a skin can be formed, which can trap excess water in the basecoat. Upon curing, the excess water forms vapor that can burst through the topcoat, leading to surface imperfections, termed pinholes or pops. A forward-time center-distance finite difference model, incorporating only diffusion and evaporation and experimentally determined coefficients, was used to simulate the water concentration in the layers of a paint film. Simulations were conducted at constant temperatures (27°C and 82°C) as well as by using temperature traces from a full-size dehydration oven under harsh (82°C) and gentle (54°C) conditions. The model accurately predicted the overall solids content after dehydration. However, in both temperature scenarios, the surface layer water concentration was less at the low temperature for the same overall solids content. This counter-intuitive finding is attributed to the increase in diffusivity with temperature, which allows water to be supplied to the surface faster in the high temperature run in each scenario. Therefore, this simple diffusion-evaporation model is not suitable for simulating water entrapment leading to popping. A critical match of pigment and photoinitiator package is crucial for good cure. Another issue facing the coatings chemist is the popularity of low energy lamps, which offer ease of handling, reduced safety concerns, and a low price tag. Obviously, the combination of curing pigmented coatings and using low energy lamps poses a special challenge. To improve the pigmented coating development cycle, a rapid workflow was needed to screen formulations for cure under low energy UV-A radiation. For these types of applications, a high-throughput screening assay for discovering desirable photoinitiator packages was developed. Fluorescent dye-doped coatings cured under UV-A radiation were extracted with solvent. The relative degree-of-cure of the film was determined to be inversely related to a combination of the absorbance and fluorescence of the extractant. When this assay is used in conjunction with automated liquid handling and a spectrophotometer with an x-y scanning stage, the coatings formulator can analyze a large variable set in a short period of time. A primary screening of photoinitiators using this workflow suggests Lucirin® TPO-L, Darocur® 4265, and Irgacure® 2100 as optimum choices. The polymeric dispersants chosen were polyacrylic acid and polyacrylamide homo- and copolymers modified with hydroxyl and/or carboxylate groups. Atomic force microscopy (AFM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) were used to assess the distribution of the titania pigment particles in the surface and bulk, respectively of the paint films, which was then compared to the gloss and surface roughness of these films. In the absence of dispersant, the pigment distribution in the paint film was not uniform and relatively large pigment aggregates appeared at the surface, resulting in a rough surface and low gloss value. All dispersants both decreased surface roughness and increased the gloss of the dry paint film, with the dispersant type considerably enhancing the pigment dispersion in the dry paint film, in agreement with results obtained in aqueous pigment suspensions. In the presence of polyacrylamide homopolymer, the paint gloss increased slightly and further increased with the hydroxyl-modified polyacrylamide copolymer. The paint gloss was highest in the presence of polyacrylic acid or carboxylate/hydroxyl-modified polyacrylamide.
