The different stages of mass loss for acrylic/melamine-crosslinked clearcoats modeled after those used in high performance automotive coating systems were explored as a function of exposure time/conditions. Two approaches were used. Transmission mode IR experiments were conducted to monitor mass loss in isolated clearcoats. OM was used to monitor mass loss in clearcoats that are part of actual multilayered coating systems. UV-screener (UVA) permanence and interphase mixing (i.e., between clearcoat and basecoat layers) as well as general chemistry depth profiling studies of model acrylic/melamine-crosslinked and acrylic/melamine+silane-crosslinked clearcoats were done as a function of system preparation and exposure time/conditions. UVA depth profiles were obtained using slab microtomy sectioning co-planar to the surface, followed by solvent extraction and UV-VIS solution analysis to monitor UVA content as a function of section mass and thickness. General chemistry depth profiles were obtained using slab microtomy sectioning (as mentioned previously), followed by ATR (IR) analysis to monitor changes in the photooxidation index balues and the spectral envelop in the 2600-3800 cm-1 range. The approaches described herein de not require expertise/equipment that is available to only a few, thus increasing the potential utility of such tools. This possibility was considered in evaluating alkane sulfonic acids catalyst performance to promote the cure of a melamine resin with acrylic polyols. The example chosen here is an evaluation of alkane sulfonic acid derivatives to measure catalytic efficiency of the cure reaction between hexamethoxymethylmelamine (HMMM) and an acrylic polyol. The IR measurements provided information on the extent of reaction, via monitoring the disappearance of the OH stretching mode at 3472 cm-1 associated with the acrylic polyol. This method may also be used to provide detailed information on reaction kinetics and insight into the cure mechanism. As the reaction proceeds, the coating's properties change and IR measurements can serve as a probe for these changes. These analysis results are combined with clearcoat fracture energy measurements to assess the possibility that a clearcoat/basecoat paint system will resist catastrophic cracking/peeling failure at long times. Taken together, all results indicate that these non traditional paint weathering performance metrics should be added to the existing repertoire of paint weathering performance metrics to ensure that inferior clearcoat/basecoat automotive paint systems are not introduced into service. Infrared spectra showed that the carbonyl concentration increased with exposure as the material oxidized, but the ultraviolet results showed carbonyl peaks that diminished with exposure. Changes in optical path length, carbonyl concentration (both infrared and ultraviolet), and C-H concentration appeared linear with the exposure period. Knowing the chemical composition of the polyester and its reaction with isocyanurate made it possible to construct a representative model of the polymer network. Computational chemistry provided confirmation of the literature on which elements of the network were susceptible to degradation. As the polymer eroded, the aromatic content including some carbonyl was lost, but the remaining polymer was oxidized. Quantitative estimates were made for the mass lost and the change in concentration of the carbonyl and CH concentrations that agreed well with results from both the infrared and ultraviolet spectroscopy. Knowing the polymer composition allowed thickness change, a macroscopic quantity, to be connected to chemical changes via the polymer network model.
