In order to study fundamental properties of such polymers, a model system of four polyurethane macromonomers that differ in the average number of double bonds per molecule was developed. Free radical copolymerization of the polyurethane macromonomers with acrylates was carried out in aqueous phase using the polyurethanes as the reactive emulsifier. The stability of the product dispersions depends on the average number of double bonds per macromolecule and the weight ratio of hydrophilic polyurethane to the acrylic part. The content of the polyurethane double bonds and their conversion was measured by nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy and by a titrimetrical method. Both bridging and depletion flocculation can occur, in addition to good particle dispersion. Dispersion phase diagrams have been developed to help visualize these interactions. The various dispersion states can have a significant effect on coating formulations and film properties. Examples of dispersion phase diagrams are presented for a model HASE anionic associative thickener and various model latexes in the presence of sodium dodecylsulfate and nonionic surfactants. The major variables affecting dispersion behavior are associative polymer concentration, latex particle size, latex surface hydrophobicity, electrolyte concentration, and surfactant concentration. The dispersion phase behavior of the HASE systems is compared to that of HEUR thickened systems reported previously. A significant difference is that much less bridging flocculation is observed in the HASE systems. In addition, nonionic surfactants induced depletion flocculation in the HASE systems but not in the HEUR systems. The effect of the dispersed phase volume fraction (phi) on the DSD of aqueous PU dispersions is also examined to understand the fundamental characteristics that result from the high shear mixing. DSD is measured by using either a high magnification video probe or dynamic light scattering, depending on the range of drop sizes. For the PU without any ionic content, the distributions appear to be bimodal with rather large drop sizes. The mean sizes of the first and second modes are about 10 and 22 µm, respectively. For the PU with an ionic content, the mean drop sizes are approximately 80 nm. The distributions reveal that functional chemistry plays a more dominant role in the process of making PU dispersions than the mechanical agitation, and that phi has a weak effect on the mean drop sizes. The results further suggest that mechanical agitation can be used to control the breadth of the distributions. The extraction process is based on the formation of the hydrophobic complex of copper(II)-H2L, which is subsequently extracted into the non-ionic surfactant-rich phase of p-octylpolyethyleneglycolphenylether (Triton X-100) at a temperature above the cloud point temperature (CPT). The phase diagrams of the binary system, water-surfactant (Triton X-100), and of the ternary systems, water-surfactant-salt (Na2SO4), were examined. The effects of the main experimental parameters such as pH, extractant concentration and non-ionic surfactant concentration on the extraction process of copper(II) were studied. The extraction yield was found to be significantly depending on the aqueous solution pH. Copper(II) was extracted with H2L and Triton X-100 in the pH range of (3–12). From the equilibrium slope analysis method, it was suggested that the stoichiometry of the extracted complexes have a composition of 1:1 (Cu:H2L). The optimum conditions of the extraction of copper(II) have been established as the following: (1) 2 × 10–3 M extractant; (2) 5 % (m/v) surfactant ; (3) pH of 7.2 ; (4) 7 % (m/v) Na2SO4 and (5) temperature of 65°C. Aqueous dispersions consisting of an experimentally determined ratio of epoxy resin and nitrile latex were evaporated at 35°C. When the dispersion was evaporated under controlled conditions without forced air flow, a flexible and adherent polymer material formed. The mechanism for coalescence was related to the loss in weight of dispersing liquid during an initial zero order kinetics stage. This was followed by a rate-controlled Fick's law diffusion through the developing coating with subsequent evaporation to the atmosphere. Experimental measurements are compared with theoretical predictions. The rate constant for the zero order time frame is 0.086 ± 0.02 h-1. In the second time frame, Ficks's law evaporation rate constant is 0.046 ± 0.017 cm.h-1 with a diffusion coefficient of 0.00092 ± 0.00051 cm2.hr-1 at 35 ± 1 °C and RH 35 ± 7%. Applications for evaporation kinetics are discussed.
