Three damage indices, related to temperature changes, humidity changes, and time of wetness, respectively, were introduced to quantify adverse effects of climate. The variation of these indices was investigated for a hot and humia climate (Miami, FL) and a hot and dry climate (Phoenix, AZ). In addition, the relative effects of solar radiation, surface wetting by rain and dew condensation, and variations in outdoor tempera ture and relative humidity on the three damage indices were investigated. Pyrene (P) was introduced during polymerization as a fluorescence probe to monitor the gelation and dissolution processes in chloroform vapor and solvent, respectively. In-situ steady state fluorescence (SSF) experiments were performed to monitor vapor uptake and chain desorption processes. Direct illumination of PMMA discs were performed to excite the P molecules embedded inside the PMMA glass. Variation in P intensity, I, was monitored during the swelling of the PMMA material exposed to chloroform vapor. It was observed that PMMA film swells like a crosslinked polymeric gel at early times by obeying the Li-Tanaka equation. Swelling time constants, tc, of PMMA discs were measured and found to have a strong correlation with the molecular weight, of PMMA. In a separate experiment, when the PMMA discs were in chloroform, desorption of PMMA chains from glass discs was monitored by observing the change of pyrene fluorescence intensity. A diffusion model with a moving boundary was employed to quantify the fluorescence data observed from dissolving PMMA discs made at various molecular weights. It was observed that desorption coefficient, D, decreased by increasing Mw by obeying the D»Mw–1 law. Permalink : https://e-campus.itech.fr/pmb/opac_css/index.php?lvl=notice_display&id=5573

Aqueous dispersions consisting of an experimentally determined ratio of epoxy resin and nitrile latex were evaporated at 35°C. When the dispersion was evaporated under controlled conditions without forced air flow, a flexible and adherent polymer material formed. The mechanism for coalescence was related to the loss in weight of dispersing liquid during an initial zero order kinetics stage. This was followed by a rate-controlled Fick's law diffusion through the developing coating with subsequent evaporation to the atmosphere. Experimental measurements are compared with theoretical predictions. The rate constant for the zero order time frame is 0.086 ± 0.02 h-1. In the second time frame, Ficks's law evaporation rate constant is 0.046 ± 0.017 cm.h-1 with a diffusion coefficient of 0.00092 ± 0.00051 cm2.hr-1 at 35 ± 1 °C and RH 35 ± 7%. Applications for evaporation kinetics are discussed.
