Poor conversion of the acrylate double bonds (67%) observed at room temperature can be overcome by irradiation at elevated temperatures. At 353 K almost complete conversion is observed, even with reduced photoinitiator content. Single or multiple UV-light flash experiments were performed to simulate technical parameters, e.g., cure speed and number of required UV lamps, with the help of RTIR spectroscopy. The results obtained were confirmed by pilot-scale UV curing experiments: one or, at most, two UV lamps of high intensity are sufficient for the curing process with respect to the double-bond conversion. The coatings based on the polyurethane acrylate dispersion show low sensitivity towards oxygen from air. Moreover, in comparison to UV curing under inert nitrogen atmosphere, a small positive effect on the conversion in the presence of air has been observed, which might be due to the contribution of peroxyl radicals or their decomposition products to curing. The polymers were prepared at four different ratios of isocyanate component/oil. Sunflower and linseed oil alkyd resin samples were also prepared as the comparative samples. The results suggest that the viscosity and the film properties of urethane oils depend on the amount and type of isocyanate component. The increase in isocyanate content of the urethane oils caused high viscosity. In comparison with the samples having the same oil content, PBTDI-based samples showed the highest viscosity. Viscosity of the polymers can dramatically affect some film properties. For example, high polymer viscosity caused short drying time. In comparision of alkali and water resistances of urethane oils with those of alkyd resins, better results were obtained depending on the structure of the urethane oils. On the other hand, alkyd resins and TDI-based polymers exhibited the best hardness properties. Permalink : https://e-campus.itech.fr/pmb/opac_css/index.php?lvl=notice_display&id=5647

In this study we applied X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) as a tool to determine if degradation products are observable which can be used to verify the consistency of the field and laboratory degradation processes for acrylic melamine-based clearcoats. Comparison of the results obtained with different techniques allows not only a higher precision in the evaluation of natural or artificial degradation, which is very difficult to obtain using traditional techniques, but also better data interpretation and, therefore, the possibility of understanding the different degradation mechanisms. In the second part, some preliminary results concerning the comparison of salt spray exposure and EIS measurements are discussed. The statistical analysis of the results showed that the degradation mechanism in the two cases is completely different and, therefore, the information which is obtained with the two testing approaches is also different. With EIS measurements obtained in immersion, it is possible to monitor, in particular, the barrier properties of the coatings, which are dominated by the presence of defects. In the case of salt spray (without scratch), the main property to be measured is the loss of adhesion which causes blister formation. One pigment is more difficult to disperse than the other in the vehicle used. The five methods that could detect changes in dispersion with each pass over a three-roll mill were a light scattering particle size distribution analyzer, a NPIRI fineness of grind gauge, gloss, contrast ratio measurements, and rheology. The gloss and contrast ratio measurements could detect changes with each pass over a three-roll mill only with a significant reduction in pigment particle size.
