One pigment is more difficult to disperse than the other in the vehicle used. The five methods that could detect changes in dispersion with each pass over a three-roll mill were a light scattering particle size distribution analyzer, a NPIRI fineness of grind gauge, gloss, contrast ratio measurements, and rheology. The gloss and contrast ratio measurements could detect changes with each pass over a three-roll mill only with a significant reduction in pigment particle size. It is necessary to know the granulometry or particle size distribution of the extender to select the appropriate one to achieve the desired properties. Two extenders with practically the same top cut, but one with a broad particle size distribution curve, and the other one with a narrow or steep particle size distribution curve, were compared in four different coating systems. The extender with a narrow particle size distribution offered some advantages over the finer one with a broader particle size distribution. The technical advantages of using such extenders over those with broad curves but similar finenesses are, in particular: ease of dispersion, higher opacity, haze-free gloss, shortening of the drying time, and spacing properties for titanium dioxide. The amount of rutile present in a paint is not linearly related to opacity. The effect of same amount of rutile at different PVC's also has different levels of contribution to opacity. Above CPVC, presence of microuoids leads to greater scattering of light, which in turn adds to the hiding power of the dried paint film. The present paper also deals with the synergistic effect by incorporation of opaque polymers in conjunction with rutile on opacity. Titre : TiO2 in automotive OEM coatings : Evaluations in high speed electrostatic minibell applications Type de document : texte imprimé Auteurs : P. A. D. Chilcott, Auteur ; J. This report describes the findings of work carried out by SCM Chemicals using a solvent-borne single-coat automotive topcoat applied by this method. A major feature of this work has been the development of a quantitative instrumental method for the measurement of opacity. This method has been used to study the effects of pigment types and loadings. It is shown that by changing TiO2 products it is possible to influence the potential opacity of a paint and, therefore, the area that may be covered at complete hiding by a given volume of that paint. The effects on gloss and haze of the resulting paint films have also been studied. In the polyester/melamine system tested, zirconia treated products and particularly TiONA® RCL-628 have been shown to generate higher opacity than those based on current silica treatment technology. It has also been shown that the superior gloss and haze performance of zirconia treated products allows the use of lower film weights and/or higher PVC levels without incurring a gloss/haze penalty compared to the performance of silica treated products.
