This report describes the findings of work carried out by SCM Chemicals using a solvent-borne single-coat automotive topcoat applied by this method. A major feature of this work has been the development of a quantitative instrumental method for the measurement of opacity. This method has been used to study the effects of pigment types and loadings. It is shown that by changing TiO2 products it is possible to influence the potential opacity of a paint and, therefore, the area that may be covered at complete hiding by a given volume of that paint. The effects on gloss and haze of the resulting paint films have also been studied. In the polyester/melamine system tested, zirconia treated products and particularly TiONA® RCL-628 have been shown to generate higher opacity than those based on current silica treatment technology. It has also been shown that the superior gloss and haze performance of zirconia treated products allows the use of lower film weights and/or higher PVC levels without incurring a gloss/haze penalty compared to the performance of silica treated products. After a theoretical introduction into the contact angle evaluation model, according to Washburn and surface free energy determination, measurements with n-hexane and acetone on six surface modified titanium dioxide pigments and their ranking in terms of wettability (or hydrophilicity) are presented. Refractive index is a fundamental property associated with crystalline structure. Titanium dioxide has its highest opacifying potential in its rutile form, which is its most atomically dense state. However an optimum crystal size, a narrow particle size distribution and good dispersion in the application are all essential if its full potential is to be realized.
