Isocyanate terminated prepolymers prepared primarily from isophorone diisocyanate (IPDI) and polyoxy propylene glycol (PPG) of MW 1000 were chain extended with trimethylol propane (TMP) and dimethylol propionic acid (DMPA) as potential ionic centers. The urethane forming reaction was carried out in N-methyl-2-pyrollidone (NMP) using dibutyl tin dilaurate (DBTDL) as catalyst. The effects of DMPA and acrylic polyol (AP) on the particle size and its distribution have been studied by automizer. The mechanical properties of the emulsion cast films were determined using Universal tensile tester (Instron). Thermal properties have been studied by using TGA and DSC. It has been observed that the particle size decreased with increase of DMPA content and increased with AP content. Tensile strength decreased, but elongation at break increased with the increase of DMPA content, whereas tensile strength increased and elongation at break decreased with the increase of AP content. The selection of initiator system is important for such a development. These developed IPN emulsions of urethane/ acrylic system were compared with plain acrylic emulsion and a physical blend of plain acrylic emulsion with two types of PUD, i.e. aliphatic urethane polymer and self crosslinking aliphatic urethane polymer with respect to mechanical properties of film, particle size distribution and water resistance. All the developed IPN emulsions were evaluated in a paint formulation for mechanical properties, chemical properties and accelerated weathering properties. They were also compared with paints based on plain acrylic emulsion and physical blends of plain acrylic emulsion with both the PUDs. Note de contenu : - Polyurethane dispersions

The main reason for loss of dry was adsorption of the cobalt (drier) on pigment surfaces as a precipitated hydroxide. Titanium dioxides with alumina surface treatment and organic pigments were most detrimental to drying. Acrylate- and phosphate-based dispersants also deactivated the cobalt, presumably due to complexation and precipitation of the cobalt. Emulsions prepared with an emulsifiable cobalt drier containing 2,2'-bipyridyl (complexing agent for cobalt) showed the best resistance to loss of dry. Atomic force microscopy of films formed from the emulsions showed that the emulsifier migrated to the film surface which, when washed with water, leaves holes or pits in the film. The pits were arranged in a hexagonal pattern characteristic of Bénard cells, which form due to surface tension and/or temperature gradients generated in the film during evaporation of water.
