From EIS and corrosion potential data analysis it was found that (1) there is not a significant influence of the tannin pretreatment on the anticorrosive protection level, which depends particularly on the barrier effect afforded by the applied paint system (however, as the corrosion process starts, tannins may cause the repassivation of steel); (2) the enhancement of the protection level afforded by the tannin primer was restricted to short immersion periods and corrosive media that were not very aggressive; and (3) water uptake was not significantly affected by the presence of the tannin primer. Fracture toughness and energy release rate data for ceramer films based on a linseed oil alkyd, a sunflower oil alkyd, and a commercial alkyd with titanium diisopropoxide bis(acetylacetonate), titanium(IV) isopropoxide, and zirconium(IV) propoxide are presented and compared to previously reported tensile data. Differences between the fracture data and the tensile data demonstrate the usefulness of fracture toughness testing. The energy release rate at fracture may be the one property to maximize in order to optimize all of the other coating properties. It may therefore be a great aid in the optimization of coating formulations. Data, from dynamic mechanical thermal analysis indicate that there may be a correlation between fracture properties and secondary relaxation processes in the films. The water permeability of the coatings, expressed as water absorption value, was measured by a method similar to the method that now is proposed as a European standard for the assessment of liquid water permeability. During artificial weathering, the samples were measured for a water absorption value, thus showing the change in water permeability as a function of weathering. The study has shown that an excess of surfactants in the alkyd emulsions has a negative effect on the coating's ability to exclude water from the test samples. A waterborne acrylic paint based on a dispersion of larger particle size (0.4 µm) showed a poor ability to exclude water compared to a similar paint based on smaller dispersion particles (0.1 µm). The alkyd emulsion paints, as single coats, showed high water absorption values compared to solventborne paints and acrylic paints. In recognition of this, we have examined the physical changes that accompany autooxidative crosslinking in alkyd films (cast from waterborne emulsions) in the presence of various combinations of metal carboxylate driers. A newly developed type of magnetic resonance (MR) profiling was used in conjunction with conventional techniques : Beck-Koller drying tests, pendulum hardness, and mass uptake. MR profiling noninvasively probes the molecular mobility of the alkyd as a function of depth (with a pixel resolution of about 9 µm), over drying times ranging from minutes to weeks. It thereby indicates drier efficiency via its sensitivity to viscosity build-up during drying and to subsequent film hardening. We show unequivocally that more uniform crosslinking is achieved using a combination of a primary (Co) and a secondary (Ca) drier, in support of conventional belief. Furthermore, these results yield new insight into the chemical mechanisms induced by the driers and are thus of clear benefit to coatings researchers and formulators. Notably, the secondary driers improve the efficiency of the hydroperoxide decomposition reactions, but they are only active during an initial period, after which crosslinking nonuniformity develops.
