The sol-gel process allowed the deposition of a covalently bound thin layer of polysiloxane networks on the wood surface that was resistant to water sorption and water leaching. The rate of weight loss resulting from surface erosion and the extent of surface color loss caused by photo-induced discoloration were decreased for coated specimens compared to uncoated specimens. One approach to developing a chromate-free surface treatment is through the use of sol-gel materials that interact strongly with both the substrate and the subsequent polymer layers. Results are reported here on a new sol-gel technique using a pre-formed, self-assembled, nano-phase particle (SNAP) sol-gel system. SNAP films have been investigated by infrared spectroscopy, atomic force microscopy, and electrochemical methods. Potentiodynamic polarization and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy demonstrated that the SNAP system generates high quality, defect-free, durable films. Formulation parameters, including crosslink density and coupling agent application, were optimized based on experimental results.

Three sol-gel precursors, titanium tetra-i-propoxide (TIP), titanium (di-i-propoxide) bis (acetylacetonate) (TIA), and zirconium tetra-n-propoxide (ZrP) were used in conjunction with cobalt, manganese, and zirconium driers. The goal of this study was to investigate if a synergy exists between the drier and sol-gel precursors with respect to the autooxidation process. Various coating properties such as hardness, adhesion, reverse impact resistance, and flexibility were evaluated as a function of sol-gel precursor and drier content. Viscoelastic and tensile properties were also investigated. Permalink : https://e-campus.itech.fr/pmb/opac_css/index.php?lvl=notice_display&id=5743
