Studies that have contributed to a fundamental understanding of the structural influences of these associative polymers on the solution behavior of such thickeners are reviewed critically avoiding the sales approach and over exuberance exhibited in so many publications in this area of coatings science. Treated steel panels coated with different paint systems were subjected to standardized (salt spray, humidity chamber, adhesion, and flexibility) and electrochemical (corrosion potential, EIS) tests. Electrochemical tests were performed by employing only panels coated with the wash primer to determine its protective effect. The binder employed in this research was prepared in the laboratory by emulsion polymerization of acrylic monomers. It was found that the tested formulation protected steel against corrosion by forming ferric tannate, which prevented oxide formation. After performing the salt spray tests, it was observed that no oxide spots developed on the scratch mark although some blisters were detected. The good stability of the binder in low pH media (pH: 2.0-2.5) and the binder/substrate interaction are decisive factors in the performance of this aqueous pretreatment system. Fracture toughness and energy release rate data for ceramer films based on a linseed oil alkyd, a sunflower oil alkyd, and a commercial alkyd with titanium diisopropoxide bis(acetylacetonate), titanium(IV) isopropoxide, and zirconium(IV) propoxide are presented and compared to previously reported tensile data. Differences between the fracture data and the tensile data demonstrate the usefulness of fracture toughness testing. The energy release rate at fracture may be the one property to maximize in order to optimize all of the other coating properties. It may therefore be a great aid in the optimization of coating formulations. Data, from dynamic mechanical thermal analysis indicate that there may be a correlation between fracture properties and secondary relaxation processes in the films. Two series of model emulsion polymers, iso-butyl methacrylate (i-BMA) and normal-butyl methacrylate (n-BMA) dispersions with varying level of trimethylolpropanetriacrylate (TMPTA) crosslinker, are studied. Coatings are characterized by positron annihilation lifetime spectroscopy (PALS), and atomic force microscopy (AFM). Formation of coherent brittle films without significant interdiffusion is achieved by consolidation below the glass transition temperature (Tg). Consolidation, or ordering/compaction of films following water evaporation at temperatures below the MFFT, results in a decrease in the relative free volume element size, Tau 3, as measured by PALS. An increase in the characteristic relaxation time for the consolidation process is evident as TMPTA levels and corresponding gel fraction increase. Consolidation below Tg is accompanied by physical aging. Coalescence and interdiffusion are achieved by annealing films at or above Tg. Annealed coatings show a decrease in Tg and an increase in PALS free volume attributed to erasure of physical aging in combination with the action of the surfactant (sodium dodecyl sulfate) as a plasticizer. Beginning with the definitions and fundamental concepts discussed in Part I, the seires is designed to broaden the understanding of polymer chemistry as utilized by the coatings industry. Part II focuses on a key factor in determining the properties of any polymer - molecular weight. In part III, phase transitions in polymers, including melting point and glass transition temperature, are discussed.
