Both bridging and depletion flocculation can occur, in addition to good particle dispersion. Dispersion phase diagrams have been developed to help visualize these interactions. The various dispersion states can have a significant effect on coating formulations and film properties. Examples of dispersion phase diagrams are presented for a model HASE anionic associative thickener and various model latexes in the presence of sodium dodecylsulfate and nonionic surfactants. The major variables affecting dispersion behavior are associative polymer concentration, latex particle size, latex surface hydrophobicity, electrolyte concentration, and surfactant concentration. The dispersion phase behavior of the HASE systems is compared to that of HEUR thickened systems reported previously. A significant difference is that much less bridging flocculation is observed in the HASE systems. In addition, nonionic surfactants induced depletion flocculation in the HASE systems but not in the HEUR systems. These tin-derived compounds exhibited biocidal activities on four different microorganisms: Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus aureus, Candida albicans and Aspergillus niger. The use of common and effective biocides depends on the surfactant molecules. On this basis, surface tension measurements were used to determine the critical micellar concentration (cmc), the minimum average area per surfactant molecule (Amin) and the surface excess concentration (L8). A direct relationship has found between the antimicrobial efficacy and L8. Permalink : https://e-campus.itech.fr/pmb/opac_css/index.php?lvl=notice_display&id=3033

During crosslinking, polyurea (PUA) is produced, and its concentration levels near the F-S interface are diminished for unpigmented coatings, whereas for the same system containing carbon black, the PUA formation is enhanced. Although the presence of carbon black particles at the F-S interface results in diminished adhesion of 2K PUR to acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene (ABS), adhesion is also affected by the presence of OH and C=O functionalities on ABS, which are potential sites for H- bonding to PUR. Stronger hydrogen donor affinity of N-H functionalities in PUA as compared to the N-H groups on PUR leads to increased H-bonding in the presence of carbon black. Enhanced intermolecular H-bonding in PUR due to the presence of carbon black particles competes with the F-S interfacial H-bonding that promotes adhesion. Anecdotal evidence suggests that under "harsh" (high temperature and velocity) dehydration conditions, a skin can be formed, which can trap excess water in the basecoat. Upon curing, the excess water forms vapor that can burst through the topcoat, leading to surface imperfections, termed pinholes or pops. A forward-time center-distance finite difference model, incorporating only diffusion and evaporation and experimentally determined coefficients, was used to simulate the water concentration in the layers of a paint film. Simulations were conducted at constant temperatures (27°C and 82°C) as well as by using temperature traces from a full-size dehydration oven under harsh (82°C) and gentle (54°C) conditions. The model accurately predicted the overall solids content after dehydration. However, in both temperature scenarios, the surface layer water concentration was less at the low temperature for the same overall solids content. This counter-intuitive finding is attributed to the increase in diffusivity with temperature, which allows water to be supplied to the surface faster in the high temperature run in each scenario. Therefore, this simple diffusion-evaporation model is not suitable for simulating water entrapment leading to popping.
