The sol-gel process allowed the deposition of a covalently bound thin layer of polysiloxane networks on the wood surface that was resistant to water sorption and water leaching. The rate of weight loss resulting from surface erosion and the extent of surface color loss caused by photo-induced discoloration were decreased for coated specimens compared to uncoated specimens. The resulting coatings were clear and their mechanical properties were tested by the Sward hardness test, cross-hatch tape adhesion test and MEK double rub test. The new initiators have the advantage of good solubility, high reactivity, and the production of colorless coatings. The best formulations obtained contain 50% ESO, 50% UVR6110, and 0.5% silwet if sulfonium gallate is used as initiator, and 60% ESO, 40% UVR6110, and 0.5% silwet if iodonium gallate is the initiator. In this study, the coating structure of a solvent-based polyurethane was analyzed to establish correlations between the intrinsic spatial scaling properties of the coating and UV exposure time. Atomic force microscopy and laser scanning confocal microscopy were employed to map surface structures over a range of scales from 80 nm to 80 mm. The roughness of the polyurethane surface was characterized in terms of scaling exponents using detrended fluctuation analysis to identify long-range, power law relations, and to correct for inhomogeneities in the surface structure. The time-dependence of the roughening process was also determined and correlated with changes in gloss. Permalink : https://e-campus.itech.fr/pmb/opac_css/index.php?lvl=notice_display&id=5581

In total, five formulations were used in this study, including a cyclohexyl epoxide without polyol, and four with polyols. The polyol formulations were varied with respect to ratio of epoxide to polyol, and molar functionality of the hydroxyl group. The formulations were exposed to a maximum of seven different relative humidities (6, 16, 20, 30, 51, 62, 75 RH). The curing speed and overall conversion of the epoxy group passed through a maxima for all the formulations. The polyol had an effect on the hydrophilicity of the overall formulation. It was also found that water and polyols had a synergistic effect on the UV-curing kinetics, in effect lowering the relative humidity to achieve a maxima. A model for UV-curing mechanisms at low, medium, and high relative humidity was proposed for both systems with and without the polyols. For years, the coatings industry has sought ways to lower the curing temperature of powder coatings UV-curable powder coatings offer the possibility of curing powder coatings at temperatures as low at 120°C. Radiation-curable powder coatings also offer high cure speed and relatively low energy consumption. As each application requires its own coating performance two different maleate-vinyl ether-based binders for UV-curable poteder coatings have been developed. With these binders the balance between flexibility and hardness of the coating can be adjusted with proper formulation. In this paper, the curing characteristic and coating performance of several UV-powder coating formulations are described In addition, a comparison between concentional powder coatings and UV-powder coatings is provided.
