The PAAMPS synthesizing took place between the Ce acetate dopant and aminopropylsilane triol (APST) as the film-forming precursor aqueous solution at 150°C. PAAMPS was evaluated for use as a corrosion-preventing coating for air-cooled condensers consisting of two metal components : aluminum fins and carbon steel tube. The key factors to ensuring the maximum performance of the PAAMPS/Ce oxide coating system in mitigating the corrosion of both aluminum and steel included (1) minimizing the content of non-reacted water-soluble APST and Ce acetate remaining in the coating, (2) lowering the susceptibility of the coating's surface to moisture, (3) precipitating a passive Ce3+ oxide (Ce2O3( film insensitive to Cl dissolution over the metal's surfaces, and (4) possessing excellent adhesion to the metal's surfaces. The combination of these factors considerably decreased the rate of the cathodic oxygen reduction reaction at the corrosion site of the metals. In fact, the corrosion rate, measured in milli-inches per year (mpy), of bare steel was reduced more than one order of magnitude by applying this coating. Correspondingly, the coating extended the useful lifetime of steel exposed in a salt-fog chamber at 35°C from only ~10 hr to ~768 hr. Furthermore, tins coating system far better protected an aluminum substrate from the corrosion than it did one of steel. Even a very thin nanoscale coating film deposited on the aluminum's surfaces reduced the corrosion rate, (mpy), by nearly two orders of magnitude over that of the bare aluminum. Also, the salt-spray resistance of aluminum panels covered by this nanoscale film was strikingly extended to more than 1440 hr, compared with -40 hr for bare aluminum. The addition of plasticizer results in a decrease in the glass transition temperature and a change in the mechanical properties. Different tests were carried out to the optimum percentage of plasticizer content (1.5-3% weight ratio to epoxy resin) required to obtain the maximum anticorrosion performance of the epoxy primer. These changes are explained by the structural-kinetic effect exerted by the plasticizer on the chemical crosslinking in the course of the epoxy network synthesis and the increase in the excess free volume. In the model coal tar components, naphthalene, quinoline, 2-naphthol, and phenanthrene showed good compatibility with polyurethane. To test their heavy duty anticorrosive properties, tensile adhesion strength of the cured coatings prepared with the compatible model coal tar components was measured, and the change in tensile adhesion strength as a function of time during salt-water spray treatment was measured. We found that the systems compounded with naphthalene, 2-naphthol, and phenanthrene showed good properties in an ordinary state for adhesion strength. However, only the system with 2-naphthol was found to have good properties in the change of tensile adhesion strength as a function of time during salt-water spray treatment. The curing time of the system with 2-naphthol was slower than that of the others, i.e., we found an inverse proportion between curing speed and adhesion durability. We also measured the dynamic viscoelasticity of cured coatings. We found that a tan delta curve of the system with 2-naphthol shifted towards a low temperature side and the tan delta at the temperature at which adhesion strength was measured was larger than that of the others. We hypothesized that the reason for the tan delta shift was a result of the decrease in crosslinking density because 2-naphthol partially capped the isocyanate group. Considering these results, we hypothesized that one of the reasons why the adhesion properties of the system with 2-naphthol had improved was due to the increase of tan delta. Results showed that coatings formed spontaneously on galvanized surfaces upon exposure to ambient temperature alkaline aluminate solutions. Anodic polarization and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy experiments showed clear evidence of surface passivation. Scanning electron microscopy showed the formation of continuous and conformal surface film comprised on a compact mass of crystallites. X-ray diffraction confirmed that the coating contained an Al-Zn hydrotalcite compound. Coating formation was enhanced by oxidizer and ammonium salt additions. Coatings formed by using best practices were deposited in less than 10 minutes and demonstrated good surface coverage and good organic coating adhesion. HT coatings formed by using best practices showed excellent organic coating adhesion compared to zinc phosphate control coatings. In salt spray testing, the presence of a hydrotalcite conversion coating under an epoxy neat resin was found to delay the onset of red rusting compared to control samples that were epoxy coated, but not conversion coated.
