Both bridging and depletion flocculation can occur, in addition to good particle dispersion. Dispersion phase diagrams have been developed to help visualize these interactions. The various dispersion states can have a significant effect on coating formulations and film properties. Examples of dispersion phase diagrams are presented for a model HASE anionic associative thickener and various model latexes in the presence of sodium dodecylsulfate and nonionic surfactants. The major variables affecting dispersion behavior are associative polymer concentration, latex particle size, latex surface hydrophobicity, electrolyte concentration, and surfactant concentration. The dispersion phase behavior of the HASE systems is compared to that of HEUR thickened systems reported previously. A significant difference is that much less bridging flocculation is observed in the HASE systems. In addition, nonionic surfactants induced depletion flocculation in the HASE systems but not in the HEUR systems. They are typically prepared as terpolymers by emulsion polymerization of ethyl acrylate (EA), methacrylic acid (MAA), and an associative macromonomer. The viscosity development and shear responses of HASE solutions depend on a number of factors. This article presents rheological data reflecting the impacts of three key variables: hydrophobe size, acid content, and molecular weight, on model HASE thickening and rheological performance. The relative contributions of hydrophobic association, chain expansion, and polymer chain length are discussed. In steady shear flow, all thickener solutions approached some constant low-shear viscosity at small deformation rates. At the same molar composition, larger hydrophobe size resulted in higher viscosity development and greater shear thinning behavior. The amount of acid monomer in HASE polymers can influence the balance between hydrophobic attraction and electrostatic repulsion forces. It was found that a minimum of 15 wt% MAA was required to effect dissolution and thickening of the model HASE polymers. Increasing the MAA level yielded higher zero-shear viscosity and storage modulus G' with maximal values being obtained at 40% MAA. The molecular weight of the model thickeners was controlled by the amount of chain transfer agent (CTA) added during polymerization. When the CTA level was below 0.1 wt% based on total monomers, the polymer solutions displayed shear-thinning behavior. A small increase in CTA concentration beyond 0.1% resulted in a dramatic change to Newtonian flow, and the solution viscosity was nearly two orders of magnitude lower. The model thickeners were also tested in a vinyl acrylic architectural paint formulation. The effects of each individual factor on paint thickener efficiency, high-shear, and low-shear properties are discussed and compared with solution rheology for predictive relationships. The glass transition temperature of the network was tuned by the ratio of diol and triol and the composition (aromatic or aliphatic) of the diisocyanate. All coatings were studied for their bulk properties as well as their surface properties. It was found that by the addition of a fluorinated additive the surface free energy of the coating was lowered by approximately 15 mN.m-1, leaving the bulk properties intact. It was also shown that these polyurethane coatings are able to adapt their surface free energy in a reversible manner when exposed to water. The magnitude and rate of surface rearrangement is strongly dependent on the network density of the coating. In the model coal tar components, naphthalene, quinoline, 2-naphthol, and phenanthrene showed good compatibility with polyurethane. To test their heavy duty anticorrosive properties, tensile adhesion strength of the cured coatings prepared with the compatible model coal tar components was measured, and the change in tensile adhesion strength as a function of time during salt-water spray treatment was measured. We found that the systems compounded with naphthalene, 2-naphthol, and phenanthrene showed good properties in an ordinary state for adhesion strength. However, only the system with 2-naphthol was found to have good properties in the change of tensile adhesion strength as a function of time during salt-water spray treatment. The curing time of the system with 2-naphthol was slower than that of the others, i.e., we found an inverse proportion between curing speed and adhesion durability. We also measured the dynamic viscoelasticity of cured coatings. We found that a tan delta curve of the system with 2-naphthol shifted towards a low temperature side and the tan delta at the temperature at which adhesion strength was measured was larger than that of the others. We hypothesized that the reason for the tan delta shift was a result of the decrease in crosslinking density because 2-naphthol partially capped the isocyanate group. Considering these results, we hypothesized that one of the reasons why the adhesion properties of the system with 2-naphthol had improved was due to the increase of tan delta. In detail, surface roughness, contact angle, Vickers-hardness, degree of surface contamination, and pull-off strength were evaluated. It was shown that overblasting had notable effects on the surface properties. Most importantly, the surface roughness was significantly reduced, and the microhardness of the substrate increased. Also, overblasting increased surface wettability. The influence on the pull-off strength of applied coating systems was only marginal. The bulk of the investigation is concentrated upon the short-lived elastic part of a spherical indentation test, but determination of the failure stress of the coating is also discussed. The results indicate that microindentation can be a powerful tool for material characterization of these materials, but only if careful efforts are made to account for the influence from plasticity as well as from boundary effects. Carboxyl functional polyester powder coatings cured with hydroxyl functional béta-hydroxyalkylamides, with variations in coating thickness and amount and type of filler, have been studied. The coatings were subjected to conventional tests for coatings and polymers and also to specially designed tests developed to study the behavior of powder coatings in clamping force joints. The specially designed tests were used to study the coatings under compressive loads, and the relation between the results from these test methods and from conventional tests is discussed. The results show the importance of coating thickness in order to achieve the desired mechanical properties of coating when used under high compressive loads. These loads put high demands on the stability of the coating, and the defects must be kept to a minimum. Increased thickness will give rise to more defects in the coating, especially voids and blisters due to the evaporation of water formed during the curing of the polyester powder coating. The surface roughness of the coating is also affected by the coating thickness, but the main influence originates from the type and amount of filler used. A rough surface will give rise to stress concentrations and increased plastic deformations in the coating, impairing the properties of the clamping force joint. As technologies advance and allow for control of coatings at the nanoscale level, methods such as Monte Carlo can be used not only to predict the behavior of a nanodesigned coating with time but also to design coatings, such as optimizing pigment particle distributions or optimum hard and soft phase distributions of the binders in multiphase systems for maintaining the desired property with time. Erosion of the coating surface was simulated using Monte Carlo techniques where terrestrial solar flux is the initiator for polymer segment cleavage and removal. The impact on the sensitivity of the polymer adjacent to the detached polymer segment can be increased or decreased in the model based on the chemistry and surface energy of the remaining polymer matrix. Multiple phases with varying sensitivity to degradation can be modeled. The Monte Carlo generates a statistically similar surface topography and chemistry of the coating. The results of the Monte Carlo model are compared to measurable properties such as gloss, fracture toughness, and wetting contact angle, using various published correlations of the property to the surface topology. The simulated properties change through the lifetime of the coating in ways that are consistent with observed behavior. Apparently, complicated changes in many properties can be described by the repeated application of simple, random processes. Factors such as hydrofluoric acid concentration, sonication time, chemical etching, and activation process were considered in the design. The analysis of variance on the orthogonal experimental results was performed, resulting in an optimal condition for achieving a uniform copper coating with high coverage. Hydrofluoric acid was found to be an essential component in the copper immersion coating bath and a possible mechanism was suggested to explain its significance in terms of magnesium film destruction and magnesium dissolution.
