It has many advantages including material, energy, and cost savings as well as greater design freedom and dimensional stability. In spite of these advantages, this technique has been limited to non-aesthetic applications by its propensity to create parts with swirling patterns on the surface, a common characteristic of all foamed parts produced. This paper describes a novel method for achieving microcellular injection molded parts free of surface defects. By controlling the amount of supercritical fluid (SCF) and adding the proper type of polymer additives into the polymer, the onset and rate of cell nucleation were properly controlled so that swirl-free microcellular injection molded parts could be successfully molded. This paper presents the theoretical background and experimental results that demonstrate the effect of polymer additives on the surface quality of microcellular injection molded parts. PolyéthylèneTags : Polyéthylène faible densité Index. décimale : 668.4 Plastiques, vinyles Résumé : Specialties required - Over the past three years, PE-LD and PE-LLD have undergone a markedly different course of development in Europe. The market for PE-LD has remained more or less constant, while demand for PE-LLD has experienced a clear increase. On the material side, growth has been prompted especially by the metallocene types, while, on the processing side, it has been the coextrusion films that have played a key role. No pioneering developments in applications have emerged for either type, with progress being focused first and foremost on points of detail. The tensile modulus, measured above the glass transition temperature, and thus the crosslink density, decreased with exposure, as expected from the chemical changes. However, the tensile modulus, measured at room temperature, increased with exposure. Physical aging of the polymer network was found to occur concurrently with photodegradation and accounts for much of the increase in room temperature modulus. Increased hydrogen bonding in the increasingly oxidized polyester-urethane may also contribute to the increase in modulus at room temperature. Both physical and chemical changes must be determined if changes, and rates of change, in performance due to weathering are to be understood.
