In this work a method for modifying the flow pattern in the weld line zone using a "flow disruptor" is proposed to strengthen the weld lines of fiber reinforced polypropylene. The flow disruptor is a small insert introduced inside the injection molding cavity, in the weld line area, and its objective is to mix the melt and disrupt fountain flow in order to blur and erase the weld line. The method is simple and low cost, does not require special machines or molds and does not affect the part shape or surface. Flow disruptors were designed, their effects analyzed by using simulation software, fabricated from different materials and encapsulated within injection molded tensile test samples for mechanical properties evaluation. The results of this work demonstrate that the mechanical properties in the weld line can be improved by the use of a well designed flow disruptor, made from suitable materials. However, they are characterized by heterogeneity and anisotropy and they present great challenges in designing and also in predicting their behavior by using the numerical simulation. The unidirectional composite material has a more relevant property which is the transverse elasticity modulus E2. The determination of E2 is still interesting researchers because of the diversity of results obtained by several models and approaches. This study aims to predict the transverse elasticity modulus E2 of a unidirectional Glass/Epoxy composite material, the effect of the arrangement fibers on the transverse elasticity modulus and predict the values of the reinforcement factor used in the Halpin-Tsai model. To do so first we adopted the micromechanical approach, which is accurate but requires much computing, and we used a calculation code based on FEM method and considered two parameters to vary, which are the volume fraction of fibers and the distribution of fibers. The obtained results of numerical modeling were tightly compared to those obtained by the available analytical models and the adopted approach can be used to predict the transverse elasticity modulus E2 and the reinforcement factor ξ. Eoliennes -- MatériauxTags : 'Composites à fibres de verre' 'Taille des fibres' Eolienne hélices' Propriétés mécaniques Index. décimale : 668.4 Plastiques, vinyles Résumé : The global demand for alternative energy sources has resulted in dramatic growth in the use of fiber glass composites for wind blades. As energy cost and efficiency demands drive the need for longer blades, the design and selection of fiber glass sizing systems are critical to optimizing blade building processes and long term fatigue performance of the blade. Experimental results have shown that changes in sizing chemistry on the surface of glass fibers can substantially improve both static and long term composite mechanical properties. In addition, resin infusion rates and finished part quality of wind blades are enhanced by the proper design and selection of fiber glass sizing elements. Performance can be further improved by the proper selection of fiber glass sizing systems in combination with a specific type of resin chemistry. Ongoing research on fiber glass products for wind blades at the PPG Fiber Glass Science and Technology Center is focused on maximizing the mechanical performance for the wind blade market.
