In most cases, the material behavior of the film as well as the substrate is described by classical elastoplasticity accounting for large deformations; further, pressure-sensitive flow models are considered. The main efforts are devoted toward an understanding of the influence from the film/substrate boundary on the stress distribution at scratching but for comparative reasons, scratching of homogeneous materials are also studied and pertinent results presented. Among other things, the results are discussed in relation to delamination initiation and growth at scratching. The numerical investigation is performed using the finite element method, and the numerical strategy is discussed in some detail. The most important finding given by the present study is that high shear stresses are the main driving force for delamination initiation and growth along the film/substrate interface. It was also noted that the influence from pressure-sensitive flow on the stress fields related to delamination initiation is small, both quantitatively and qualitatively. This integrated approach essentially involves (a) the use of a new scratch test device for testing, (b) employing microscopy techniques and image an analysis tool, VIEEW®, for studying material damage and scratch visibility, and finally (c) performing finite element (FE) modeling to examine the mechanical response of the polymeric substrate involved during the scratch process. Applying this approach to five model material systems and employing linearly increasing load tests, the findings of the fundamental material science study of the scratch damage of these materials are presented. From the three-dimensional FE analysis, the numerical results generated were able to reasonably predict the scratch damage and provide corresponding mechanistic interpretation. The essential link between material science and mechanics outlines the uniqueness of this approach for studying the scratch damage of polymers. Viscoelastic behavior was measured using instrumented indentation. A model based on the contact between a rigid probe and a viscoelastic material was used to calculate values for the creep compliance and stress relaxation modulus for two polymeric materials, epoxy and poly(methyl methacrylate) or PMMA. Scratch testing was performed on these materials with various probes under a variety of conditions, and confocal microscopy was used to characterize the resulting deformation. Relationships among viscoelastic behavior, scratch damage, and appearance are currently being explored using these methods along with finite element modeling. Most results are used for qualitative assessment purposes, which result in the lack of a repeatable and reliable standardized test method for the polymer materials community. To implement a scientifically based standardized test method for quantifying scratch resistance, it is vital to understand the relationships between material mechanical properties, morphology, and appearance (optical properties) of surface and subsurface deformation. In this article, preliminary results from a scratch testing protocol to identify the "onset" of plastic deformation in poly(methyl methacrylate) and poly(propylene) commercial samples are presented. Recent advances in optical scattering measurements to identify the onset of plastic deformation by analyzing specular and off-specular intensities are also presented. By increasing silica content, an increase of silica particles in size and number was observed. Small silica particles were preferentially present at the surface. The influence of the silica content on the König hardness, indentation hardness, and elastic modulus was minor. The improved scratch resistance determined for a hybrid coating with 11.4 wt% silica, compared to a similar organic coating without silica, was attributed to small silica particles preferentially present at the surface.
