Two types of HPEC were examined, containing 25% and 10 % ethylene (E), respectively, as ethylene/propylene rubber (EPR). Electron spin resonance (ESR) spectra of nitroxide radicals in HPEC were studied in the temperature range 100-433 K ; the nitroxides were derived from the HAS and are termed HAS-NO. The results were compared with ESR spectra of the same radicals obtained first by oxidation of Tinuvin 770 and then were doped in HPEC and related homopolymers, polyethylene (PE) and polypropylene (PP) ; these nitroxides are termed spin probes. ESR spectra indicated that HAS-NO and the spin probes reside in a range of amorphous sites differing in their dynamic properties. The relative population of the sites was explained by assuming that the crystalline domains exert a restraining effect on chains located in vicinal amorphous domains. Spatial and temporal effects of the aging process were studied by ESR and ESR imaging (ESRI) of HAS-derived nitroxide radicals, and by FTIR of films prepared by compression molding. 1D ESRI enabled the visualization of an outer region of thickness 100 µm that contained a lower amount of nitroxides, and is believed to result from the loss of the stabilizer by diffusion (blooming) and possibly also in chemical reactions during aging. Two-dimensional spectral-spatial ESRI indicated the presence of nitroxide radicals in two amorphous sites, fast and slow ; the corresponding relative intensity varied with sample depth. Both ESRI and FTIR experiments suggested a faster degradation rate in HPEC containing 25 % E, as compared to 10 % E ; moreover, a larger Tinuvin 770 content in the polymers led to less efficient stabilization. FTIR spectra indicated increased ordering of polypropylene segments in HPEC during aging at 433 K. This integrated approach essentially involves (a) the use of a new scratch test device for testing, (b) employing microscopy techniques and image an analysis tool, VIEEW®, for studying material damage and scratch visibility, and finally (c) performing finite element (FE) modeling to examine the mechanical response of the polymeric substrate involved during the scratch process. Applying this approach to five model material systems and employing linearly increasing load tests, the findings of the fundamental material science study of the scratch damage of these materials are presented. From the three-dimensional FE analysis, the numerical results generated were able to reasonably predict the scratch damage and provide corresponding mechanistic interpretation. The essential link between material science and mechanics outlines the uniqueness of this approach for studying the scratch damage of polymers. One often specifies, therefore, that the surface of the substrate be pretreated. Pretreatment methods can vary, from oxidation of the surface, e.g., plasma or flame, to diffusion and mechanical interlocking of an applied polymer with the surface. Mechanical interlocking with the nonpolar TPO surface can be achieved through the use of an adhesion promoter, namely a chlorinated poly(olefin) (CPO). The type of CPO utilized, in addition to the types of solvents and heat treatments utilized, can substantially influence the degree of adhesion/cohesion obtained within the CPO/TPO system. This article reviews the factors influencing the adhesion/cohesion of painted TPO substrates. Heat histories, TPO molding variations, CPO types, including solvent and resin variations, and topcoat (basecoat/clearcoat) chemistries are all found to influence the adhesion/cohesion of the painted TPO assembly (herein termed composite). Once adhesion of a topcoat system to the TPO substrate is achieved, however, the durability of that system to external forces is in question. External forces acting upon the painted composite, e.g., compressive stresses, tensile stresses, and single and/or multiple impact forces, can lead to devastating consequences. Chip or impact resistance and scratch or compressive/tensile (gouge) damage resistance can be affected by the choice of topcoat chemistries utilized. Topcoat frictional behavior, tensile strengths, and surface hardness were all determined to be influential factors in providing robust damage resistance to the painted composite. Effect of pigment concentrations and dispersing agents on various color properties of the molded specimens, such as reflectance versus wavelength characteristics, angular dependency, K/S data, and flop index were evaluated using the CIE system with goniospectrophotometer. Surface image analysis was also conducted. Based on the above parameters, design equations were developed. The study revealed that the effective concentration of the interference pigment was 0.5% and better color characteristics were found when poly (ethylene glycol) was used as a dispersing agent.
