This integrated approach essentially involves (a) the use of a new scratch test device for testing, (b) employing microscopy techniques and image an analysis tool, VIEEW®, for studying material damage and scratch visibility, and finally (c) performing finite element (FE) modeling to examine the mechanical response of the polymeric substrate involved during the scratch process. Applying this approach to five model material systems and employing linearly increasing load tests, the findings of the fundamental material science study of the scratch damage of these materials are presented. From the three-dimensional FE analysis, the numerical results generated were able to reasonably predict the scratch damage and provide corresponding mechanistic interpretation. The essential link between material science and mechanics outlines the uniqueness of this approach for studying the scratch damage of polymers. The analysis was first realized through a friction test. This article deals with the application of a numerical identification procedure of coating bulk behavior to the studied cases. The mechanical properties of the chosen coatings are identified using Vickers microindentation. A plastic behavior law representing the coating and its neighboring substrate is identified using an inverse approach. The obtained bulk behavior law of the coating provides an accurate understanding of the performance of that coating. Many correlations are posited between the behavior laws, such as resistance to seizure and other characterization results, particularly SEM examination and coating weight. This knowledge leads to an objective optimization of the manganese phosphating process using finite element computation. The test is designed for measuring the adhesion of paint to deformable steel sheets as used in building, automotive, and other cladding applications, and does not require detailed knowledge of the paint mechanical properties. A stiff overlay, such as an epoxy resin, is applied to the coating, and the steel substrate is peeled away using a roll of well defined radius to which the steel substrate is con strained. The propagation of a crack within the paint or at some interface in the paint/metal system depends mostly on the mechanical properties and thickness of the overlay and the radius of the constraining roll. The test is shown to discriminate better than existing practical adhesion tests between paints of expected differing adhesion/cohe sion, but also presents some inconsistencies that require further work to resolve.
