Acrylic dispersants / V. Kumar in PAINTINDIA, Vol. XLIX, N° 6 (06/1999)
[article]
Titre : Acrylic dispersants Type de document : texte imprimé Auteurs : V. Kumar, Auteur Année de publication : 1999 Article en page(s) : p. 77-80 Note générale : Bibliogr. Langues : Anglais (eng) Tags : Peinture Adjuvant Dispersant 'Acrylique dérivé polymère' Index. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : Dispersants are one of the most important additives used in paint industry to keep pigment in dispersed form in resin and to avoid settling. Nowadays acrylic dispersants are used more than natural dispersants because of their ability to reduce mill base viscosity to achieve higher pigmentation and to retain colour of pigments. For industrial-grade polydisperse dispersant polymers, functional groups are not evenly distributed among the polymer chains. The functional group distribution in polyurethane dispersant polymers was investigated by statistical estimation and an adsorption experiment. The polymeric dispersants had a broad functional group distribution and contained a significant amount of non-functionalized chains. By considering the existence of these ineffective chains, the dispersion behavior of the paint was more clearly explained. The described method can be a useful tool to analyze the structure and the properties of polydisperse functionalized polymers for various applications. A novel wetting and dispersing agent will be described which meets practical industrial needs. It offers the opportunity to produce pigment concentrates without using additional wetting additives or grinding resins. It was found that some non-ionic dispersants produced suspensions that exhibited full steric stabilisation as opposed to electrosteric stabilisation that occurs with ionic dispersants. A high level of steric stabilisation was found to relate to greater flocculation resistance in both the wet and dry phases, which can result in improved paint stability and higher opacity. These same ions, when released, may cause problems with the dispersants used, yielding at best metastable pigment dispersions. Examination of typical dispersant shows the dispersions vary in effectiveness. Screening progams using only dispersant and pigment are worth the effort in producing stable colloidal systems in practice.
