The mixing in a lab-scale extruder resulted in a virtually complete break-up of the pigment agglomerates. The average TiO2 particle size was only slightly reduced after further treatment of the TiO2 pigments with any dispersant. Hawever, a significant change in the colloidal stability of the dispersions was observed. Without dispersants, the pigments reagglomerated when heated to 200°C and 235°C. This reagglomeration was completely suppressed by the use of dispersants, as a result of a steric layer around the TiO2 particles. Most results are used for qualitative assessment purposes, which result in the lack of a repeatable and reliable standardized test method for the polymer materials community. To implement a scientifically based standardized test method for quantifying scratch resistance, it is vital to understand the relationships between material mechanical properties, morphology, and appearance (optical properties) of surface and subsurface deformation. In this article, preliminary results from a scratch testing protocol to identify the "onset" of plastic deformation in poly(methyl methacrylate) and poly(propylene) commercial samples are presented. Recent advances in optical scattering measurements to identify the onset of plastic deformation by analyzing specular and off-specular intensities are also presented. Previously, we showed that QUV-B weight loss rates can be used as an early predictor of the weatherability of fluoropolymer/acrylic biend clearcoats. In this work, we study the microscopic basis for differences seen between various blends and pure acrylic coatings. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) images reveal different characteristic patterns of degradation. Permalink : https://e-campus.itech.fr/pmb/opac_css/index.php?lvl=notice_display&id=5682

Polyester resins are used as raw materials for coil coatings. The aim of this work was to study the viscoelastic properties of coil coatings. Differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) was found to be useful in curing studies of lacquers, for example, to predict conversion as a function of cure time or cure temperature. Dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA) was used to determine the gel times of some clearcoats. The DSC measurements were done with different apparatus and software programs. This study concentrates on the use of these modern techniques to predict the curing and correlation of the results.
