Previously, we showed that QUV-B weight loss rates can be used as an early predictor of the weatherability of fluoropolymer/acrylic biend clearcoats. In this work, we study the microscopic basis for differences seen between various blends and pure acrylic coatings. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) images reveal different characteristic patterns of degradation. Permalink : https://e-campus.itech.fr/pmb/opac_css/index.php?lvl=notice_display&id=5682

Gloss is affected by PVDF crystallite structures and by the pigmentation. In this article, we have demonstrated that for some pigmented PVDF coatings, after 10 years of Florida exposure, the principal proximal cause of gloss changes is the formation of micron-scale pits, rather than the emergence of pigment particles at the coating surface. We have used laser scanning confocal microscopy (LSCM) and light scattering to characterize the surface topography and near-surface structure of weathered and unweathered PVDF coatings. Florida-weathered PVDF coatings show only a modest increase in the root mean square (RMS) roughness of the surface, even when noticeable gloss loss has occurred. Changes in gloss can be correlated with surface roughness and other topographical features, including the formation of pits and the emergence of pigments. Tags : 'Peinture poudre' Thermoplastique 'Amide 11 polymère' 12 'Vinylique alcool copolymère' acétate 'Ethylène 'Vinylidène fluorure 'Etude expérimentale' 'Calorimétrie différentielle balayage' 'Diffraction RX' 'Traitement thermique' Trempe Recuit 'Propriété mécanique' Feuil Index. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : This study examines thermoplastic polyamide 11, nylon 12, ethylenevinylacetate/vinylalcohol copolymer, poly (vinylidene fluoride), and polyester powder coatings via differential scanning calorimetry and wide angle x-ray diffraction studies to quantify annealing and quenching effects. As a part of this study, panels were coated and cured at 250°C for 5 min. Cooling was affected by either rapid quenching or controlled annealing. The thermal, mechanical, and x-ray diffraction analysis data indicate no significant property changes on quenching or annealing the thermoplastic coatings with the exception of the highly crystalline poly (vinylidene fluoride) coating. Annealing the latter coating reduced impact resistance and flexibility. These findings are consistent with earlier results in which no major stress development was observed in quenched thermosetting powder coatings, yet annealing increased crosslink density and diminished mechanical properties.
