Unfortunately, advanced epoxy resins require formulation with large quantities of solvent that make attainment of modern VOC regulations difficult or impossible. Coatings formulated from low molecular weight liquid epoxy resin, on the other hand, can easier meet VOC challenges, but dry slowly and tend to be brittle. This presentation explores the concept of using fast reacting, di-functional amine chain extenders to generate epoxy oligomers in situ as a means to meet these opposing property demands. Methylamine-terminated poly-(N-methylazetidine) (pNMAz, 1) is prepared in a two-step process involving the Michael addition of methylamine to acrylonitrile, followed by hydrogenation in a methylamine-containing atmosphere to yield an oligomer stream with an [M.sub.n] of about 250. Competitive pseudo-first-order kinetic measurements conducted in isopropyl alcohol indicate methyl-substituted disecondary diamines reacted approximately 3 to 3.6 times faster with phenyl glycidyl ether (PGE) than the primary amine meta-xylylenediamine (MXDA). These chain extenders can be formulated with traditional multi-functional amine crosslinkers to yield coatings with lower VOC, faster dry speed, and better flexibility compared to corresponding coatings formulated without the chain extender. This distribution may affect such properties as the "local" glass transition temperature and structural heterogeneity and thereby modify formability, stain resistance, and weatherability. The self-condensation regions have not previously been observed in detail so their distribution in the film is unclear. Confocal Raman microscopy (CRM) has been used to characterize the melamine distribution in three polyester–melamine paint systems: one clear and two pigmented coil coatings. Both the surface mapping and depth profiling features of CRM were used to perform a 3D analysis. The depth profiling of the clear coating was performed in a nondestructive way, but due to the opaque nature of the pigments, cross sections of the pigmented coatings were prepared in order to facilitate the analysis of the melamine distribution through the film thickness. Melamine-enriched zones were found on the surfaces of all three samples. They appeared to be approximately spherical with diameters of around 5 µm. It was also observed from the cross sections that the melamine-enriched zones appeared as "particles" distributed randomly through the coating. The Raman spectra collected at these regions show significantly higher triazine ring band intensity. All of these findings confirm the hypotheses constructed over the past 20–30 years. In this study, the polyester polyol resins were synthesized by using 1,4-cyclohexanedimethanol (1,4-CHDM) with the mixture of different diacids as 1,3-cyclohexanedicarboxylicacid (1,3-CHDA), 1,4-cyclohexanedicarboxylicacid (1,4-CHDA), isophthalic acid (IPA), adipic acid (AA), and azelaic acid (AZA). The solubility and viscosity of these polyester polyol resins were determined by using suitable solvent. All the polyester polyols were crosslinked with HDI isocyanurate and IPDI trimer to form polyurethane coating films. These films were evaluated for their mechanical, thermal, and chemical resistance properties. The studies on film characteristics reveal that the cycloaliphatic diacids afforded polyurethane with greater performance properties than that of aromatic and linear aliphatic diacids. Langues : Américain (ame) Tags : Urea Isobutyraldehyde Formaldehyde Resin Structure Characterization Index. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : Urea–isobutyraldehyde–formaldehyde (UIF) resins were synthesized using urea, isobutyraldehyde, and formaldehyde; sulfuric acid was used as a catalyst. The effects of molar ratio of urea/isobutyraldehyde/formaldehyde (U/I/F) on the properties of resins were investigated, and the structures of the resins were characterized by FTIR, 1H-NMR, and 13C-NMR. When U/I/F was 1.0/3.6/2.4, the yield of the resin was 76.5 %. The softening point and hydroxyl value were 90°C and 32 mg KOH/g, respectively. The FTIR, 1H-NMR, and 13C-NMR results showed that an a-ureidoalkylation reaction occurred between urea and isobutyraldehyde to form a lactam. The UIF resins also contained hydroxyl groups and aldehyde groups; the content of aldehyde groups in the resin increased as the amount of isobutyraldehyde increased. The influence of the molecular weight of epoxy oligomer and acrylic polymer and their ratio on self-stratification was investigated. The degree of stratification depending on molecular weight and their mutual ratio was determined using ATR-FTIR spectroscopy, differential scanning calorimetry, microscopy techniques, adhesion tests, and surface tension measurements. Phase separation and self-stratification of two-component homogenous mixtures were followed using FTIR technique and surface tension measurements. As a result of these investigations, optimal oligomeric/polymeric composition was selected. The obtained coating system showed good mechanical properties, gloss, and interlayer adhesion. Corrosion performance of the nano-composite coatings were evaluated by applying these nanocomposites on mild steel substrate and exposing them to salt spray, humidity, and accelerated weathering. Mechanical properties were studied by subjecting the coating to scratch and abrasion test. The results showed that, with an increase in the concentration of nano-Al2O3 there was an improvement in the corrosion resistance, UV resistance, and mechanical properties of the coatings indicating the positive effect of addition of nano-Al2O3 particles in the coatings. Further, the transparency of the coating was not altered, maintaining the optical clarity of the coating. This paper describes the anticorrosive behavior of a commercial pigment mixture containing zinc hypophosphite, reduced levels of zinc phosphate, and zinc oxide. The anticorrosive performance of the pigment mixture was assessed by electrochemical techniques (corrosion potential and linear polarization measurements) employing pigment suspensions. The behavior of each separate component of the mixture was also studied in the same way. The nature of the protective layer was investigated by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). In a second stage, the anticorrosive properties of the pigment were assessed by incorporating it into alkyd and epoxy paints that were evaluated by accelerated (salt spray and humidity tests) and electrochemical measurements. Experimental results showed that improved anticorrosion protection is achieved in paints with reduced zinc phosphate contents as a consequence of the synergistic interaction between zinc hypophosphite and the other components of the pigment mixture. The design is based on the theory of gas dynamics in which the potential energy of high stagnation pressure is converted totally into effective velocity energy. Therefore, a high momentum of the exit jet can be obtained for improving the capability of removing molten debris quickly. Furthermore, the microencapsulated red phosphorus particles were prepared by RESS with the new nozzle, and the structure and property of the microencapsulated red phosphorus particles were characterized by the SEM images, droplet concentration distributions, and moisture absorption ratio. The results show that the process can effectively encapsulate the red phosphorus particles with the paraffin. Transmission electron microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, and X-ray diffraction were carried out to analyze the as-sprayed coatings and powders. Mercury intrusion porosimetry was applied to analyze the pore size distribution. Laser flash technique and differential scanning calorimetry were used to examine the thermophysical properties of the nanostructured coatings. The results demonstrate that the as-sprayed nanostructured zirconia coatings consist of the nonequilibrium tetragonal phase. The microstructure of the nanostructured coatings includes the initial nanostructure of powder and columnar grains. Moreover, micron-sized equiaxed grains were also exhibited in the nanostructured coatings. Their evolution mechanisms are discussed. The as-sprayed nanostructured zirconia coating shows a bimodal pore size distribution, and has a lower value of thermal conductivity than the conventional coating. Electrodeposition of ternary Zn–Ni–Fe alloy was investigated and compared with the characteristics of Zn–Ni electrodeposits. The electrodeposition was performed from a sulfate bath onto a steel substrate. Structural analysis by X-ray diffraction (XRD) method revealed that the Zn–Ni–Fe alloys consisted of a mixture of zinc, and (gamma-Ni2Zn11) and (Fe3Ni2) phases. The study was carried out using electrochemical methods such as cyclic voltammetry and galvanostatic for electrodeposition, while anodic linear polarization resistance and anodic linear sweeping voltammetry techniques were used for the corrosion study. Surface morphology and chemical composition of the deposits were also examined by using scanning electron microscopy and atomic absorption spectroscopy, respectively. It was found that the obtained Zn–Ni–Fe alloy exhibited more preferred surface appearance and better corrosion resistance without adding any organic brighteners to the plating bath in comparison to Zn–Ni alloy that electrodeposited at similar conditions. Results obtained revealed that the increase in corrosion resistance of ternary deposits is not only attributed to the formation of (gamma-Ni2Zn11) phase, but also to iron codeposition and formation of (Fe3Ni2) phase. It was found that a thick and relatively porous Ti coating was deposited by cold spraying. The coating surface layer presented a more porous structure. The microhardness of the as-sprayed Ti coating was slightly higher compared to pure Ti bulk, owing to the work hardening effect during deposition. After annealing at 850°C for 4 h under vacuum condition, the Ti coating also presented a porous structure with more uniformly distributed small pores. A metallurgical bonding between the deposited particles was formed through annealing treatment. The adhesive strength of coating was significantly improved after annealing. The microhardness of the annealed Ti coating was also increased. The process was used to form a diffusion alloying layer on the surface of the sample to improve corrosion resistance. The diffusion alloying layer was mainly composed of Mg–Al intermetallic compounds. The continued immersion test in 5% NaCl solutions displayed that molten salt diffusion-treated specimen had better corrosion resistance compared to the untreated AZ91D specimen. The polarization test indicated that the Mg–Al intermetallic compounds of the layer were an effective corrosion barrier to decrease the corrosion rate for AZ91D magnesium alloy when exposed to 3.5% NaCl solutions. The microhardness values of the Mg–Al intermetallic compounds were higher than those of the substrate. The solid-state reactions between the deposited niobium and silicon carbide matrix were studied by examining the obtained films using X-ray diffraction and energy dispersion spectroscopy. The results indicated that niobium silicides could be formed at the beginning, which blocked further reactions between carbon and niobium to form niobium carbides. When the deposition temperature was increased, silicon would diffuse outward, which allowed the formation of niobium carbides. The reaction process and mechanism are discussed based on the thermodynamics and kinetics.
