Titre : Copolymers of styrene and maleic anhydride : reactivity ratio, physical behavior and spectral properties Type de document : texte imprimé Auteurs : Suman Kumari, Auteur ; Dhirendra Nigam, Auteur ; Devendra Agarwal, Auteur ; Indira Nigam, Auteur Année de publication : 2008 Note générale : Bibliogr. Langues : Anglais (eng) Tags : Styrene maleic anhydride (SMA) copolymer Reactivity ratio Index. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : Radical polymerization of styrene and maleic anhydride was carried out in N,N-dimethylformamide (DMF) as a solvent at the temperature of 80°C using benzoylperoxide as initiator. The monomer ratio was varied in the range of 0.5:1 to 4:1. The copolymer compositions were determined by CHN-elemental analysis. The copolymers were characterized by CNMR spectroscopy and was used to determine the copolymer composition. These values are comparable to those obtained from CHN-analysis although the mole fractions of styrene as observed by elemental analysis in the copolymers is slightly higher than the corresponding values observed by CNMR spectra. The ratio of styrene and maleic anhydride in the copolymer was in the range of 1.02 - 1.17 up to the monomer feed ration 2:1 and increased to about 1.53 for feed ratio of 4:1. This shows styrene and maleic anhydride have a strong tendency to form an alternating copolymer which deviates slightly when higher concentration of styrene is taken in the feed. This tendency can be explained on the basis of either of two mechanisms viz. chain transfer complex formation as well as penultimate effect due to presence of a polar solvent. The reactivity ration were determined by various methods viz Myao Lewis, Fineman Ross method, Kelen Tudos methods. The more precise value of reactivity ratio could be determined by Kelen Tudos as compared to other methods. The reactivity ratios determined by these methods shows that r1r2 <<1 which further indicated that on copolymerization of styrene and maleic anhydride, an alternating copolymer was formed. Titre : Eco-friendly high performance coatings from vinyl ester resins Type de document : texte imprimé Auteurs : Devendra Agarwal, Auteur ; Arun Maithani, Auteur Année de publication : 2002 Article en page(s) : p. 43-48 Note générale : Bibliogr. Langues : Anglais (eng) Index. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : Vinyl ester resins with varied acid values (12, 24,35, 40 and 49 mg KOH g-1 solid) were prepared by reacting an epoxy novolac resin with methacrylic acid. The coating samples were prepared by dissolving these ester resins in styrene as a reactive diluent (40% w/w). These solution coatings were cured using benzoyl peroxide as the initiator (2 phr). The curing conditions of the experimental coatings were determined by using the Differential Scanning Calorimeter (DSC) system. The DSC scans were obtained under dynamic and isothermal conditions to choose a temperature and time for completion of the curing reaction (90 mts at ∼85øC). The coatings were applied on sandblasted steel sheet panels with the help of a film applicator for an approximate film thickness of about 100 microns. These panels were dipped into various chemicals for a period ofone year to check their chemical resistance. The mechanical and electrical properties of these coatings have also been determined. The thermal stability of these coating compositions were estimated by considering the onset degradation temperature in the thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). The coatings based on vinyl ester resin with minimum acid value was found to be the most thermally stable and having excellent mechanical, electrical and chemical resistance properties. Revêtements -- Propriétés mécaniquesIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : A series of polyester polyol resin was synthesized by using 1,4-cyclohexanedimethanol (1,4-CHDM) and three different diacids: 1,3-cyclohexanedicarboxylic acid (1,3-CHDA), isophthalic acid (IPA) and adipic acid (AA). The solubility and viscosity of the polyester polyols were determined by using methyl ethyl ketone (MEK). All the polyester polyols were crosslinked with hexamethylene diisocyanate (HDI) isocyanurate to form polyurethane coating films. These films were evaluated for their mechanical and chemical resistance properties. Studies on the film characteristics revealed that the polyurethane films based on cycloaliphatic diacid generally showed comparatively better performance properties than the polyurethane film based on aromatic and linear aliphatic diacids in general.
