One often specifies, therefore, that the surface of the substrate be pretreated. Pretreatment methods can vary, from oxidation of the surface, e.g., plasma or flame, to diffusion and mechanical interlocking of an applied polymer with the surface. Mechanical interlocking with the nonpolar TPO surface can be achieved through the use of an adhesion promoter, namely a chlorinated poly(olefin) (CPO). The type of CPO utilized, in addition to the types of solvents and heat treatments utilized, can substantially influence the degree of adhesion/cohesion obtained within the CPO/TPO system. This article reviews the factors influencing the adhesion/cohesion of painted TPO substrates. Heat histories, TPO molding variations, CPO types, including solvent and resin variations, and topcoat (basecoat/clearcoat) chemistries are all found to influence the adhesion/cohesion of the painted TPO assembly (herein termed composite). Once adhesion of a topcoat system to the TPO substrate is achieved, however, the durability of that system to external forces is in question. External forces acting upon the painted composite, e.g., compressive stresses, tensile stresses, and single and/or multiple impact forces, can lead to devastating consequences. Chip or impact resistance and scratch or compressive/tensile (gouge) damage resistance can be affected by the choice of topcoat chemistries utilized. Topcoat frictional behavior, tensile strengths, and surface hardness were all determined to be influential factors in providing robust damage resistance to the painted composite. Effect of pigment concentrations and dispersing agents on various color properties of the molded specimens, such as reflectance versus wavelength characteristics, angular dependency, K/S data, and flop index were evaluated using the CIE system with goniospectrophotometer. Surface image analysis was also conducted. Based on the above parameters, design equations were developed. The study revealed that the effective concentration of the interference pigment was 0.5% and better color characteristics were found when poly (ethylene glycol) was used as a dispersing agent. Langues : Américain (ame) Tags : Matériau revêtement Peinture Adhérence Thermoplastique Oléfine polymère Industrie automobile Matière plastique Méthode mesure Adjuvant Index. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : The use of thermoplastic poly(olefins) in the automotive industry continues to proliferate due to their decreased cost and weight and increased recyclability in comparison to thermoplastics such as poly(carbonate) alloys or poly(urethanes). An attribute that continues to hamper the widespread introduction of thermoplastic poly(olefins), in particular thermoplastic olefin (TPO, a blend of impact copolymer and elastomer), into additional automotive components, however, is its poor surface wettability and adhesion. Adhesion promoter formulation, both in terms of resin composition and solvent variation, has been known to influence the adhesive propensity of topcoats when analyzed by typical tests such as peel strength. It has long been disputed, however, that peel strength is not a true measure of paint adhesion since it artificially introduces a film between the paint and the adhesion promoter to enable one to perform the test. In contrast, this paper discusses the use of a newly developed in-situ adhesion test, described as compressive shear delamination (CSD), to quantify the adhesive/cohesive propensity of coatings to a variety of TPO substrates. The effect of solvent type and chlorinated poly(olefin) (CPO) adhesion promoting resin on the adhesion/cohesion of topcoats to TPO is described. Chlorinated poly(olefin) type, followed by solvent variation, was shown to have the most significant impact on the adhesion/cohesion of topcoats. This newly described CSD protocol for determining the weak link in painted plastic may have a significant impact on the choice of topcoat, adhesion promoting primer formulation, and substrate in particular automotive applications. Most results are used for qualitative assessment purposes, which result in the lack of a repeatable and reliable standardized test method for the polymer materials community. To implement a scientifically based standardized test method for quantifying scratch resistance, it is vital to understand the relationships between material mechanical properties, morphology, and appearance (optical properties) of surface and subsurface deformation. In this article, preliminary results from a scratch testing protocol to identify the "onset" of plastic deformation in poly(methyl methacrylate) and poly(propylene) commercial samples are presented. Recent advances in optical scattering measurements to identify the onset of plastic deformation by analyzing specular and off-specular intensities are also presented. The consequent depletion of the stabilizer from the topcoat could account for significantly poorer durability for coatings applied on plastic than on a nonpermeable substrate such as steel. These studies investigate the migration of both nonreactable and reactable UV absorbers (UVAs) and hindered amine light stabilizers (HALS) in fully formulated 2K urethane coatings applied on thermoplastic olefin (TPO) and steel substrates. Extensive migration of the nonreactable stabilizers occurs during accelerated exposure of the cured coating, and this migration correlates with poorer performance on TPO. Functionalization of the stabilizer with a group which covalently reacts into the coating will prevent much of this migration, and the improved degree of retention of the reactable light stabilizers in the topcoat correlates with improved performance on TPO substrates. In addition, stabilizer variables, such as the type and extent of functionalization as well as their chemical structure, have an effect on both the migration and performance of the stabilizers.
