The word is on everyone's lips, and nowhere more so than in board rooms and executive offices of the world's great business enterprises. Innovation is something that every business values and wishes to create; yet it is a concept that often defies definition. It is not uncommon for a group of knowledgeable individuals to disagree not only about the value of innovation, but also about the meaning of innovation. One person's innovation can be another's product or process improvement (e.g., Gillette's new M3Power vibrating blade razor-innovation or product improvement?) and the ensuing dialogue frequently raises questions not only about the nature and definition of innovation, but also about the way in which innovation is used to create something useful and market-friendly. The perceived value of new concepts and inventions quite often colors whether they are seen as innovations, or whether they are seen as intellectual and/or laboratory curiosities. Moreover, concepts and inventions that might be deemed to be innovative (i.e., having value) at Point Y in history may not have been seen that way at Point X 20 years earlier. Innovations, consequently, are often declared retrospectively-many years may pass between the initial cognitive output and the recognition that it either represented, or was transformed into, an innovation. There are periods of time, however, when the process of innovative thinking is much more important than the actual creation of true innovations, and we are in such a period. It is this broad concept-the recognition, transformation, and profitable use of innovative thinking-which is discussed in this article. One often specifies, therefore, that the surface of the substrate be pretreated. Pretreatment methods can vary, from oxidation of the surface, e.g., plasma or flame, to diffusion and mechanical interlocking of an applied polymer with the surface. Mechanical interlocking with the nonpolar TPO surface can be achieved through the use of an adhesion promoter, namely a chlorinated poly(olefin) (CPO). The type of CPO utilized, in addition to the types of solvents and heat treatments utilized, can substantially influence the degree of adhesion/cohesion obtained within the CPO/TPO system. This article reviews the factors influencing the adhesion/cohesion of painted TPO substrates. Heat histories, TPO molding variations, CPO types, including solvent and resin variations, and topcoat (basecoat/clearcoat) chemistries are all found to influence the adhesion/cohesion of the painted TPO assembly (herein termed composite). Once adhesion of a topcoat system to the TPO substrate is achieved, however, the durability of that system to external forces is in question. External forces acting upon the painted composite, e.g., compressive stresses, tensile stresses, and single and/or multiple impact forces, can lead to devastating consequences. Chip or impact resistance and scratch or compressive/tensile (gouge) damage resistance can be affected by the choice of topcoat chemistries utilized. Topcoat frictional behavior, tensile strengths, and surface hardness were all determined to be influential factors in providing robust damage resistance to the painted composite. This integrated approach essentially involves (a) the use of a new scratch test device for testing, (b) employing microscopy techniques and image an analysis tool, VIEEW®, for studying material damage and scratch visibility, and finally (c) performing finite element (FE) modeling to examine the mechanical response of the polymeric substrate involved during the scratch process. Applying this approach to five model material systems and employing linearly increasing load tests, the findings of the fundamental material science study of the scratch damage of these materials are presented. From the three-dimensional FE analysis, the numerical results generated were able to reasonably predict the scratch damage and provide corresponding mechanistic interpretation. The essential link between material science and mechanics outlines the uniqueness of this approach for studying the scratch damage of polymers. The consequent depletion of the stabilizer from the topcoat could account for significantly poorer durability for coatings applied on plastic than on a nonpermeable substrate such as steel. These studies investigate the migration of both nonreactable and reactable UV absorbers (UVAs) and hindered amine light stabilizers (HALS) in fully formulated 2K urethane coatings applied on thermoplastic olefin (TPO) and steel substrates. Extensive migration of the nonreactable stabilizers occurs during accelerated exposure of the cured coating, and this migration correlates with poorer performance on TPO. Functionalization of the stabilizer with a group which covalently reacts into the coating will prevent much of this migration, and the improved degree of retention of the reactable light stabilizers in the topcoat correlates with improved performance on TPO substrates. In addition, stabilizer variables, such as the type and extent of functionalization as well as their chemical structure, have an effect on both the migration and performance of the stabilizers. Two types of HPEC were examined, containing 25% and 10 % ethylene (E), respectively, as ethylene/propylene rubber (EPR). Electron spin resonance (ESR) spectra of nitroxide radicals in HPEC were studied in the temperature range 100-433 K ; the nitroxides were derived from the HAS and are termed HAS-NO. The results were compared with ESR spectra of the same radicals obtained first by oxidation of Tinuvin 770 and then were doped in HPEC and related homopolymers, polyethylene (PE) and polypropylene (PP) ; these nitroxides are termed spin probes. ESR spectra indicated that HAS-NO and the spin probes reside in a range of amorphous sites differing in their dynamic properties. The relative population of the sites was explained by assuming that the crystalline domains exert a restraining effect on chains located in vicinal amorphous domains. Spatial and temporal effects of the aging process were studied by ESR and ESR imaging (ESRI) of HAS-derived nitroxide radicals, and by FTIR of films prepared by compression molding. 1D ESRI enabled the visualization of an outer region of thickness 100 µm that contained a lower amount of nitroxides, and is believed to result from the loss of the stabilizer by diffusion (blooming) and possibly also in chemical reactions during aging. Two-dimensional spectral-spatial ESRI indicated the presence of nitroxide radicals in two amorphous sites, fast and slow ; the corresponding relative intensity varied with sample depth. Both ESRI and FTIR experiments suggested a faster degradation rate in HPEC containing 25 % E, as compared to 10 % E ; moreover, a larger Tinuvin 770 content in the polymers led to less efficient stabilization. FTIR spectra indicated increased ordering of polypropylene segments in HPEC during aging at 433 K. A widely used technique for assuring paint adhesion to TPO is the use of adhesion promoter primers based on chlorinated polypropylenes (CPO). Much research has been focused on understanding the forces involved at the interfaces of substrate, adhesion promoter, and topcoats resulting in the adhesion or the loss of adhesion in various environmental conditions. This study correlates the adhesion performance of CPO and nonchlorinated adhesion promoters (NCPO) as measured by peel strength with properties observed through microscopy techniques. Adhesion performance of CPOs, NCPOs, and blends are quantified through the use of 90° and 180° peel strength studies. Surface characteristics of adhesion promoters applied over a TPO substrate and cured at various temperatures are examined through the use of atomic force microscopy (AFM). The TPO investigated was a blend of high modulus polypropylene with an ethylene-butene copolymer (EBR9) containing 9 wt% butene. The CPO was a maleated chlorinated polypropylene containing 20 wt% Cl. The purpose of these experiments was to obtain detailed mechanistic information about the CPO-TPO interaction. To achieve acceptable contrast in these measurements, a fluorescent dye was covalently attached to a small portion of the CPO. Solvent wiping of the TPO substrates with isopropyl alcohol followed by xylenes prior to coating with CPO increased the mean roughness of the TPO surface by more than 100 nm; but it had a much larger effect on the roughness of the (several micrometers) CPO-TPO interface after coating. The EBR component of the TPO was shown to be exclusively responsible for the roughness increase. We also found evidence of a diffuse interface between the CPO and ERB components that was localized to sites in which the EBR was present at the TPO surface.
