With the noninvasive feature of LSCM, one can obtain thickness information directly and nondestructively at various exposure times without destroying the specimens or deriving the thickness values from IR measurement by assuming uniform film ablation. Two acrylic polymer coatings were chosen for the study, and the physical and chemical changes of the two systems at various exposure times were measured and analyzed. Those measurable physical changes caused by UV exposure include film ablation, formation of pits and other surface defects, and increases in surface roughness. It was found in both coatings that changes in measured film thickness by LSCM were not correlated linearly to the predicted thickness loss using the changes in the CH band obtained by the Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy measurements in the later degradation stages. This result suggested it was not a uniform film ablation process during the UV degradation. At later stages, where surface deformation became severe, surface roughness and profile information using LSCM were also proven to be useful for analyzing the surface degradation process. With an objective to test its in vivo anti-inflammatory potential, we conducted a screening clinical bioassay using randomized analysis on sixteen panelists. An emulsion containing 0.02% of sea whip extract was applied to the volar forearm of subjects prior to or after an ethyl nicotinate challenge. Blood flow rate at the application site monitored using a laser doppler blood flowmeter served as a measure of inflammation induced by ethyl nicotinate. Upon post-challenge treatment, sea whip extract reduced blood flow by 35.04% against untreated control and also delayed the blood flow. More pronounced reduction in blood flow, as low as 59.50%, was noted upon pretreatment. This reduction was significant (p < 0.0095). Pretreatment caused not only a delay in onset of inflammation but also a reduction in the peak time of blood flow. This study further substantiates the previously reported in vitro anti-inflammatory effect of sea whip extract, demonstrating its activity in deep skin layers by affecting blood flow. The preventive application prior to induction of inflammation was more effective when compared to post-treatment. The electrical conductivity and the transparency of CO2-laser-treated ITO nanoparticle coatings were characterized with regard to the application as transparent electrodes. Furthermore, the stability of the electrical conductivity under oscillatory bending was investigated. A specific resistance of 0.12 Ω cm is obtained by CO2-laser treatment without thermally damaging the PET film. The improvement of the electrical conductivity can be explained by a slight sinter neck formation. For a film thickness of 3 μm, a sheet resistance of 400 Ω/□ and a transmission in the visible range of 80 % were achieved. The stability of the electrical conductivity of CO2-laser-treated ITO nanoparticle coatings under bending was investigated using a specially constructed device for the application of various oscillatory bending loads. For a bending radius of 10 mm, the sheet resistance does not exceed 1000 Ω/□ after 300 bending cycles. Compared to commercial sputtered ITO coatings, CO2-laser-treated ITO nanoparticle coatings show a significant higher stability under oscillatory bending.
