Inorganic precursor peroxides for antifouling coatings / S. M. Olsen in JOURNAL OF COATINGS TECHNOLOGY AND RESEARCH, Vol. 6, N° 2 (06/2009)
[article]

Salissures biologiquesIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : Modern antifouling coatings are generally based on cuprous oxide (Cu2O) and organic biocides as active ingredients. Cu2O is prone to bioaccumulation, and should therefore be replaced by more environmentally benign compounds when technically possible. However, cuprous oxide does not only provide antifouling properties, it is also a vital ingredient for the antifouling coating to obtain its polishing and leaching mechanism. In this paper, peroxides of strontium, calcium, magnesium, and zinc are tested as pigments in antifouling coatings. The peroxides react with seawater to create hydrogen peroxide and highly seawater-soluble ions of the metal. The goals have been to establish the antifouling potency of an antifouling coating that releases hydrogen peroxide as biocide, and to investigate the potential use of peroxides as water-soluble polishing and leaching pigments. The investigations have shown that it is possible to identify particulates that, when applied as pigments in antifouling coatings, will provide polishing and leaching rates comparable to those of Cu2O-based coatings. Furthermore, the combination of polishing and hydrogen peroxide leaching by a coating based on zinc peroxide in a suitable binder matrix provides antifouling properties exceeding those of a similar coating based entirely on zinc oxide.

SilicatesIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : Fire is a serious threat to people and the structures they build. There is a continuous development of newer methods and materials to prevent its effects on them. Nowadays, a lot of attention is being paid in the design of public and commercial buildings by incorporating fire safety. Passive fireproofing of high-rise structures has become very important due to the use of steel in load bearing mode and has attracted increased attention after the collapse of the WTC towers. Conventional passive fireproofing materials include concrete covering, gypsum board and cementitious coatings which have a poor aesthetic. Intumescent fire-resistive coatings are a newer type of passive fireproofing coatings usually applied as thin film and they swell many times their original thickness forming an insulating char which acts as a barrier between the fire and the structural steel. It prevents the temperatures of the steel members from reaching a critical value and helps in maintaining the integrity of the structure in fire event. They are the preferred choice for passive fire protection of load bearing steel frame structures of architects and designers as they offer aesthetic appearance, flexibility, speed of application, and ease of inspection and maintenance. The present review covers recent developments in the field of intumescent coatings with a major emphasis on organic intumescent coatings. The role of various ingredients, their interactions in intumescent coatings, effects of various pigments, binders and additives are discussed briefly.

Revêtements protecteursIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : Inverse gas chromatography (IGC) was applied to the surface characterization of polymers and pigments used in the formulation of protective coatings. IGC measurements over a significant temperature range provided surface energy and acid-base interaction parameters for these materials. Two sets of IGC data were obtained: (1) the quantity of vapor used to probe solid surfaces was extremely small, with results describing the properties of the most energetic surface sites; and (2) finite concentrations of vapor probes were used, with results describing the average properties of surface sites. A comparison of the two sets gave information on the heterogeneity of sites on the polymer and pigment surfaces. Heterogeneity parameters were defined for sites interacting through dispersion forces as well as for those able to interact as acids and bases. The present work reinforces the usefulness of surface characterizations by IGC by showing that the stability of pigments dispersed in the polymer vehicles was a function of the acid-base interaction between polymer-pigment pairs.
