Gold has fascinated people down through the centuries because of its unique appearance. The yellowish metal possesses high gloss, extreme light-dark flop and high hiding power, even when present in very thin layers.
With the help alloys of copper and silver, different colour impressions can be achieved. Furthermore, gold is stable to environmental influences and is non-toxic. Extraction of the yellow metal is complex and expensive, which is why the alchemists of yore tried to make it from readily available materials. But even the renowned alchemist Albertus Magnus had to concede that he himself never actually succeeded in producing gold artificially, saying : "In truth, these are only superficial, apparent transmutations, in which only the appearance of the metals is changed, but never their inner essence".Note de contenu : - Gold leaf

Aluminum pigments were first coated with sol-gel film by using tetraethoxysilane (TEOS) and vinyltriethoxysilane (VTES) as the precursor, followed by free radical copolymerization of styrene (St), divinylbenzene (DVB) and maleic acid anhydride (MAA) with the vinyl group of the VTES. The as-prepared encapsulated aluminum pigment was characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). Subsequently the stability of the aluminum pigments in alkaline aqueous media was examined. It was found that both the TEOS-and-VTES-coated (TV-coated) and the TEOS-VTES-St-DVB-MAA-coated (TVSDM-coated) aluminum pigments were superior in the stability test over the uncoated aluminum pigments. Furthermore, the corrosion protection efficiency of the TVSDM-coated aluminum pigments reaches 99.8%, indicating that the inorganic-organic hybrid composite layer on the surface of the aluminum pigments can protect them well. ZincIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : The effects of lamellar aluminum (Al) and micaceous iron oxide (MIO) pigments on the anticorrosion properties of an epoxy zinc-rich coating were studied. To this end, the epoxy zinc-rich coatings containing 70% w/w spherical Zn particles, 60% w/w Zn + 10% w/w MIO, and 60% w/w Zn + 10% w/w Al were prepared. The electrochemical noise (ECN), potentiostatic polarization technique, and salt spray test were employed in order to investigate the anticorrosion performances of the zinc-rich coatings. The zinc-rich coatings morphologies were studied by scanning electron microscope (SEM) before and after the salt spray test. The open-circuit potential values were also measured at different immersion times. Results showed that MIO particles could enhance the cathodic protection duration of the zinc-rich coating by enhancing its barrier properties and reducing the zinc particles oxidation rate. It was also shown that Al particles reduced zinc-rich coating sacrificial behavior at short immersion times and increased it at long immersion times. Unlike MIO particles, Al particles behaved both as barrier and sacrificial pigment. Note de contenu : - EXPERIMENTAL : Materials and samples preparation - Analytical techniques

Revêtements antisalissures:Peinture antisalissuresIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : • Six lectures presented in 2012 at a half-day seminar dealing with corrosion-related topics, organised by OCCA's West Riding Section, are summarised.
• Metallic flake pigments have been shown to provide better performance at lower addition rates than ordinary particles. This concept is now being developed from anticorrosive coatings to antifoulings, using copper flake pigments.
Some basic principles of corrosion were outlined in the second lecture. Corrosion is essentially an electrochemical process, requiring the presence of moisture and oxygen. Some coating failure issues were also briefly outlined.
The keynote speech by Dr Siva Biihm of Tata Steel described a number of innovative anticorrosive coatings developed by the company.
A number of zinc-free anticorrosive pigments were described. The speaker noted that high performance could be obtained by careful pigment selection, and that synergies can be obtained by using a mixture of such pigments.
• Liquid corrosion inhibitors based on DNNS salts were described. Their advantages include high transparency for use in ciear coatings and synergy with solid inhibitors in other coatings.
• Finally, the development and application of new coating systems on the famous Forth Bridge in Scotland was described. For more than a century, maintenance painting has been a continuous activity, but the new coating system has a much longer design lifetime of 25 years minimum.Note de contenu : - UNDERSTANDING THE USE OF METALLIC FLAKE PIGMENTS FOR ANTI-CORROSION : Protection for aluminium - Improving antifoulings
