The surface tension at cmc (Ycmc) and critical micelle concentration (cmc) of the surfactants in aqueous solutions have been investigated. C20 values (surfactant concentration in the solution phase that will reduce the surface tension of the solvent by 20 mNm–1) were also obtained. The critical micellar concentration (cmc) and the minimum average area per surfactant molecule (Amin) at the air-water interface of Gemini surfactant decrease with increasing number of methylene moieties in the spacer and, consequently, with the enhanced hydrophilic character of the molecule. The results were discussed with particular emphasis on the effect of the length spacer on the hydrophilic character of the spacer group. The surface studies of the molecules confirm that the exothermic values of the differential enthalpy of micellization (DmicH°) decrease as the methylene moieties are lengthened. Moreover, the values of the free energy (DmicG°) and entropy (DmicS°) of micellization indicate an entropy driven phenomenon for all surfactants. The effect of length spacer on surfactant adsorption for Gemini surfactants was utilized to calculate such thermodynamic parameters as the free energy of adsorption (DadsG°) and the heat of adsorption (DadsH°). The low value of DadsH° is an evidence for the physical adsorption of anionic surfactants. The relatively large value of entropic contribution (TDadsS°) indicates that the adsorption of anionic surfactants is entropically governed. The terminal groups have been either benzoates, propionates, or hydroxyls. The glass transition (Tg) and viscosity of the resins have been shown to depend on the polarity of the end groups. The increase in viscosity gives the hydroxy functional resin the highest viscosity, while the propionate functional resin has the lowest Tg and viscosity. The acrylates are all free radically UV cured with little or no oxygen inhibition found. The residual unsaturation in the cured films is not detectable with Raman spectroscopy, i.e., less than five percent. The cured films are all hard with a Tg difference varying with the structure of terminal groups in the resins.

First, 72 novel hydroxyalkyl carbamate and dihydroxyalkyl carbamate-terminated poly(dimethylsiloxane) (PDMS) oligomers and their carbamate-linked block copolymers with poly(e-caprolactone) (PCL) were synthesized using a high-throughput synthesis system. These PDMS oligomers and block copolymers were characterized for their molecular weight using high-throughput Gel Permeation Chromatography (Rapid-GPC). The 72 oligomers were then incorporated into siloxane-polyurethane formulations at four different levels resulting in 288 coatings. After initial screening of these 288 coatings, eight coatings were selected for further characterization. Differential scanning calorimetry, dynamic mechanical analysis, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and surface energy analysis demonstrate the presence of PDMS on the surface with a polyurethane underlayer. Pseudo-barnacle adhesion and the attachment strength of reattached live barnacles (Balanus amphitrite) were in good agreement. Out of the eight coatings that were down-selected, two coatings performed well in algal (Ulva), bacterial (Cytophaga lytica, Halomonas pacifica), and barnacle (Balanus amphitrite) laboratory screening assays and are potential candidates for ocean testing.
Si(OCH2CH3)4 + 2 H2O → SiO2 + 4 CH3CH2OH.

The prepolymer was mixed with crosslinking agent and photoinitiator to form coating formulas. The coating was characterized by nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, and contact angle measurements. The results indicated that the dosage of AMPS and TEOS had great influence on the antifog performance. With an increasing TEOS amount, the hardness, adhesion, water resistance, impact resistance, and thermal stability of the films were improved, at the expense of transparency ; with increasing dosage of AMPS, the hydrophilicity of the film increased at the expense of water resistance. Optimum coating properties could be obtained when the amount of AMPS was 7% and that of TEOS was 5.5%. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and atomic force microscopy (AFM) results showed that some SiO2 microspheres were formed and microphase separation occurred between the macromolecular segments, yielding the excellent coating properties. For this purpose, firstly, alkyd resin was synthesized and modified with acrylic monomers by changing organosilane monomer content in the range of 4–16 wt% in all acrylic monomer compositions. Then, the carboxyl groups on the hybrid resins were neutralized with a base and the coating recipes were formulated using these water-reducible resins. The chemical structure and composition of the synthesized polymers were confirmed using 1H-NMR and FTIR spectroscopies. Mechanical properties of coatings applied on the cold-rolled steel surfaces were investigated via crosshatch adhesion, pendulum hardness, gloss, impact, and conical mandrel bend tester. According to the results, it can be said that water-reducible acrylic-modified alkyd coatings offer a good balance of hardness and flexibility. Then, the line was scratched parallel to the coating system and the surface coating properties of the coated panels, such as the adhesion strength after being exposed to humidity and corrosion resistance, were comparatively investigated. The best results for corrosion resistance and adhesion strength were obtained with the coating which was formulated with the resin having organosilane monomer of 8 wt% in all acrylic monomer mixtures. As the organosilane monomer amount increased to 16 wt%, the coatings’ corrosion resistance and adhesion strength decreased. As a result, it was observed that organosilane modification is significantly effective in improving the adhesion strength and corrosion resistance of water-reducible alkyd coatings. However, increasing the amount of silane monomer may reverse the positive results obtained. This study also reveals significant results about the correlation between the adhesion strength and corrosion resistance of coatings by presenting visual results.
