Protection contre le rayonnement ultravioletIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : The effects of various nano-particle types and sizes on color, wettability, and surface chemistry of radiata pine (Pinus radiata) sapwood samples were investigated over 6 weeks of outdoor exposure. Specimens were treated with 0.2% wt/wt water dispersions of zinc oxide (ZnO), titanium dioxide (TiO2), aluminum oxide (Al2O3), silica dioxide (SiO2), cerium dioxide (CeO2), and iron oxide (Fe2O3), and four nano-sizes of Fe2O3. Color changes during exposure were characterized by measuring CIE L*a*b* color parameters, surface wettability changes were assessed using water droplet contact angle, and chemical changes were characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). Nano-particles protected wood from photo-discoloration to differing degrees with iron oxide providing the most effective and consistent protection. Smaller alpha Fe2O3 nano-particles provided better UV protection. Nano-particles did not reduce wettability of wood after UV exposure nor were they able to completely prevent lignin degradation. Zinc oxide nano-particles provided some cellulose and hemicellulose protection during UV exposure. Iron oxide nano-particles exhibited some potential for limiting degradation, but the differences were small and not significant from untreated controls. The results suggest that combinations of zinc and iron oxide might be useful for UV protection, and further trials are planned with these mixtures. Direct-to-metal coatings formulated with resins made using 2,2,4,4-tetramethyl-1,3-cyclobutanediol not only are rugged and deliver bestin-class weathering and corrosion resistance but can also be a potential replacement for 2-coat systems. The samples were characterized by FT-IR, EDS, BET surface area and Zeta potential technique. The surfaces contain carbonyl and hydroxyl functional groups which act as a binding sites for Cu(II) ion. Adsorption kinetics of Cu(II) was tested by first order kinetics, Elovich and parabolic diffusion kinetic equations which shows that adsorption is a diffusion controlled process. The rate of adsorption was high at high adsorption temperature. Thermodynamic parameters like ΔH°, ΔS° and ΔG° were calculated from the kinetic data. Spectrométrie à énergie dispersiveIndex. décimale : 668.1 Agents tensioactifs : savons, détergents Résumé : The adsorption of basic green 4 from aqueous solution on calcium exchanged clay (Attock-Ca and Swat-Ca) was studied. Clays were first purified and activated with H2SO4and then exchanged with Ca2+ions. Clay was characterized by BET surface area, XRD and SEM/EDS. The adsorption kinetic at 298 K and 306 K showed that the first order models were applied to the data. The rate constant increased with the rise in temperature of adsorption/activation. Thermodynamic properties (ΔE≠, ΔH≠, ΔS≠and ΔG≠) for the adsorption process were calculated. Positive values of ΔH≠showed that the adsorption of basic green 4 is endothermic. Positive values of ΔS≠reflected the increase in the disorder of the system at the solid-solution interface during adsorption. The Gibbs free energy, which is the driving force for adsorption is negative indicating spontaneous adsorption. Freundlich’s and Langmuir’s models described the equilibrium adsorption study and found to fit the experimental data. Nevertheless, most of the preparations imply the introduction of fluorinate chemicals for the formation of the hydrophobic moieties, which are potentially toxic for the marine environment in the case of an accidental release. The present work evaluates the possibility of removing fluorinate species for the implementation of such coatings and their replacement with analogous long-alkyls. In particular, this work presents an easily implementable procedure for the manufacturing of an amphiphilic system that exploits the reactivity of a commercially available –OH-rich hybrid polysiloxane resin. The resin was first modified through sol–gel chemistry that was used in the grafting of a silane-bearing hydrophobic long-alkyl chain, while the introduction of the hydrophilic moieties was conducted contextually to the curing process, through the reaction with a commercially available PEG-ilate isocyanate hardener. The effective persistence of the amphiphilic character with respect to the replacement of the fluorinate silane by the alkylsilane was ensured by the measurement of the hysteresis contact angle. The effectiveness of the persistence of the antifouling/foul-release properties was assessed through testing against the adhesion and deposition of egg white, as a proteinaceous probe, Mytilus edulis (mussel) and Ulva intestinalis (algae). All the tests indicated that the amphiphilic coating prepared from long-alkyl silane performed even better than fluorinate silane-containing samples in this hybrid coating system resulting from the fusion of a xerogel and a resin. The results suggested that the use of a long alkyl silane was an effective alternative to the use of potentially noxious fluorinate silanes, with advantages that boost the ecological benefits and also include the performance of the coating.
