While some users prefer the colour of denim fabrics to have different colours as they use them, others want to be provided with colour stability of the fabrics during use. In this study, the effect of a sol-gel technique on indigo dyed denim fabrics was investigated. The aim was to reduce the colour change that occurs in denim fabrics as a result of external factors by using silica-based coatings. The sols were prepared by using TEOS (tetraethylortosilicate) and different volumes of GPTS ((3-glycidyloxypropyl)trimethoxysilane) as precursors in acidic and alkaline conditions. Synthetic indigo dyed cotton denim fabrics were treated with the sols by applying the pad-dry-cure method. It was determined that the colour strength of the treated samples increased and the fabrics treated with the sols prepared in alkaline condition became darker compared to the sols in acidic condition. It is seen that the use of crosslinkers while preparing the sol could improve the rubbing and washing fastness of commercial denim samples. A combination of porous stainless steel and water has attracted attention in the area of the heat transfer devices. However, the water wettability of stainless steel is poor, limiting the performance of the devices. In the present study, the silica coating of the specimens was conducted via a reaction of tetraethyl orthosilicate (TEOS) after pretreatment using NaOH aq. or HCl aq. Energy-dispersive X-ray spectrometry revealed that the amount of silica deposited on the surface was dependent on the pretreatment conditions and the composition of the silica-coating solutions. Measurement of porous properties indicated that the silica coating did not affect pore diameter and gas permeability since the coating was in nanoscale. Microscale contact angles were directly evaluated using an environmental SEM. The specimens showed excellent water wettability when they were covered with numerous tiny silica bumps. When the specimen was pretreated with 2 M NaOH aq. and coated in weak alkaline TEOS solution, the contact angle of the porous stainless steel decreased from 87° to 54° after silica coating. The excellent water wettability originated from the relatively smooth surface and a sufficient coverage ratio, which resulted from the moderate strength of chemical etching of the NaOH aq. and the mild silica-coating condition in the weak alkaline solution. Sol-gel, ProcédéIndex. décimale : 675 Technologie du cuir et de la fourrure Résumé : Despite its popularity in other industries, including textiles, for the preparation of inorganic and hybrid coatings, the use of sol-gel for leather finishing is a barely explored field. To exploit its unique and versatile chemistry, we have here evaluated the potential of sol-gel route for preparing protective coatings and achieve, at the same time, water- repellency on treated leather. To this aim, tetra-ethyl-ortho-silicate (TEOS) and functionalized Si-alkoxides, containing either alkyl or fluorinated groups were selected and compared.
The results of characterization indicate that, for the chosen formulations, alcohol-based sols were patently more effective than their water-based counterparts. Very high contact-angles were obtained for both alkyl- and fluorinated alkoxides, but, not surprisingly, fluorinated coatings provided a longer-lasting hydro-repellency. Sols well preserved leather grain, with no patent accumulation on pores or ridges, while only minor changes in color was observed in most formulations.
Overall, our results suggest that a careful optimization of sol-gel formulation can offer unexplored, versatile and very effective solutions in leather finishing.Note de contenu : - Synthesis and deposition of the sols

Traîtements de surfaceIndex. décimale : 675 Technologie du cuir et de la fourrure Résumé : In this study investigations of the effect of atrnospheric pressure plasma activation and plasma coating on leather surface properties were performed. The plasma treatments of leather samples were carried out with a planar dielectric barrier discharge (DBD) at atmospheric pressure. Different gases (02, N2). were used for activating the leather surface and thin layers were deposited on to the finished leathers with hexamethyldisiloxane (HMDSO) and tetraethyl orthosilicate (TEOS) precursors. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) end atomic force microscopy (AFM). were employed to characterize the surface properties of the treated leathers. The chemical composition of the leather surfaces was evaluated by energy dispersive x-ray spectroscopy (EDX) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The surface state of the leathers was evaluated by contact angle measurements. After plasma treatment, the uneven surface of natural leather tends to become smooth by ionic bombardment of the plasma. Experiments show that plasma treatment with.TEOS and HMDSO improves the waterproof quality of leather while plasma activation with gases increases its hydrophilic property. It was concluded that application of plasma activation in combination with plasma coating can be useful for enhancing the hydrophobic and fastness properties of leathers. The prepolymer was mixed with crosslinking agent and photoinitiator to form coating formulas. The coating was characterized by nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, and contact angle measurements. The results indicated that the dosage of AMPS and TEOS had great influence on the antifog performance. With an increasing TEOS amount, the hardness, adhesion, water resistance, impact resistance, and thermal stability of the films were improved, at the expense of transparency ; with increasing dosage of AMPS, the hydrophilicity of the film increased at the expense of water resistance. Optimum coating properties could be obtained when the amount of AMPS was 7% and that of TEOS was 5.5%. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and atomic force microscopy (AFM) results showed that some SiO2 microspheres were formed and microphase separation occurred between the macromolecular segments, yielding the excellent coating properties.
