The aim was to reduce the NMA content and the formation of free formaldehyde from pigment printing pastes by employing newly synthesized core-/shell-type polymers. After five washing cycles, the synthesized core-/shell-type polymer including 1% NMA in the core and 1% NMA in the shell with T g values +30°C and −20°C, respectively, with lowest total NMA content (1.03%) yielded the best result and showed closest ΔE values to the commercially available polymer including 4% NMA. Dry and wet rubbing fastness results showed no significant changes in the absence of NMA when compared with NMA containing samples. The penetration degree of the pigment pastes of the corresponding polymers was relatively higher on 100% cotton fabric for both red- and blue-colored pigments. A negligible decrease in color strength has been observed for all polymers when colored in red.

Modification of latex polymers is an ongoing process to improve paint performance and it can be accomplished by various methods. In this study, styrene and n-butyl acrylate latex polymers are modified by three functional monomers (methacrylamidoethyl ethylene urea (MAEEU), dimethylaminoethyl methacrylate (DMAEMA), and glycidyl methacrylate (GMA)) alone or combined in different amounts in latex polymer formulations. Impacts of these functional monomers both on latex polymers, and paints made from these latex polymers are investigated. The characterization of the latex polymers are analyzed by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), minimum film forming temperature (MFFT), dynamic light scattering (DLS), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). Scrub resistance, whiteness, hiding power, glossiness, hardness, contact angle, adhesion on annealed glass and hot-dip galvanized steel surfaces, and color retention properties of the paints are examined. The results are compared with a nonfunctional reference and a commercial styrene-acrylic-based latex polymer, separately. The outcomes confirm that alone and the combinations of these monomers in styrene-acrylic-based latex polymers improve the paint by enhancing scrub resistance, better adhesion on surfaces and the ability to control hydrophobicity and color efficiency. The effects of mercury and gallium radiation sources employed either singly or in combination for UV curing and the total energy level on the printing performance were investigated. The cured textile samples were subjected to colour measurements before and after five cycles of washing, and hiding power and changes in chromacity, hue, and colour were determined. Single-lamp applications of mercury and gallium were not satisfactory, and opaque pigment hindered deep curing, especially at thicker coating levels. It was found that employment of a mercury–gallium lamp system applying an irradiation at medium level can provide pigment printing of opaque white inks with excellent coverage, washing resistance, and medium hardness.
