Titre : Machining of composites with abrasive waterjets Type de document : texte imprimé Auteurs : Ralf Möller, Auteur Année de publication : 2007 Article en page(s) : p. 48-49 Langues : Anglais (eng) Tags : 'Industrie aéronautique' Application 'Condition mise en oeuvre' 'Equipement mis 'Jet eau' 'Coupage jet' 'Usinage jet abrasif' 'Matériau composite' Index. décimale : 668.4 Plastiques, vinyles Résumé : It is widely known that composite materials offer significant strength-to-weight advantages over metals. These advantages couldn't be more evident than as seen in the increasing use of composite materials on commercial and military aircraft. Where airframes were traditionally constructed of metal, structures such as the fuselage, wings, and the empennage (vertical and horizontal stabilisers), are now made of composite materials. The question is not new, but the pressure from the latest composite aircraft programmes has forced industry leaders to rethink their approach and seek real cost savings. In the last four years, pattern-matching process control has been gaining ground over statistical process control, for which the added value is inherently limited in low-volume/high-complexity environment. The ability of pattern matching to drive processes to their best performance with no change to the specifications and the control limits, as well as unquestionable cost savings, have already convinced shop floors and engineering offices of the most important aircraft manufacturers in the USA, Canada, Australia, Germany, UK, Spain and France. Note de contenu : - So how to avoid defects without having to modify the process or its control limits ?

Given recent price rises in sheet metal and composite materials, this is starting to bite. Composite materials are already expensive, and recent double-digit price increases by a major composite manufacturer have cut even further into margins. Those companies that employ a more efficient nesting method will gain considerably over their competitors, not only in the amount of material saved but also in the time taken to create the nests. So what can manufacturing companies do to improve their material utilisation ? Note de contenu : - Composite cutting requirements

Clean Sky will be built upon 6 "platforms" or Integrated Technology Demonstrators (ITD). These will perform preliminary studies and down-selection work, followed by large-scale ground or in-flight demonstrations in order to bring innovative technologies to a maturity level where they can be applied to new-generation "green" aircraft. One of these platforms is the Eco-Design ITD, focused on designing equipped airframes for a reduction in inputs, outputs and nuisances.
