Applying automation to the fabrication of composite-based aerospace parts / John Melilli in JEC COMPOSITES MAGAZINE, N° 56 (04/2010)

Titre : Applying automation to the fabrication of composite-based aerospace parts Type de document : texte imprimé Auteurs : John Melilli, Auteur Année de publication : 2010 Article en page(s) : p. 58-61 Langues : Anglais (eng) Tags : 'Fibre minérale' Aérospatiale 'Application industrielle' 'Equipement mis en oeuvre' Stratifié 'Plastique renforcé fibre' 'Fabrication assistée' carbone' 'Matériau composite' Automatisation Index. décimale : 668.4 Plastiques, vinyles Résumé : Aircraft and rotorcraft parts made from high-performance composite materials are superior to earlier generation metals due to their increased strength, reduced weight, and increased service life. For these reasons, most aircraft part designers choose to create new parts out of carbon-fibre-reinforced plastic despite the challenges involved, namely that the manufacture of CFRP parts is more complex than traditional materials and can therefore make parts more costly to produce. This paper describes the method that Accudyne Systems has created for developing automation equipment to manufacture composite parts economically. Parts are also becoming larger, and the tooling to produce such large parts in composite is a key factor in their cost and quality. In this paper, we discuss a novel type of composite material, and a new approach to mould fabrication that not only eliminates many of the drawbacks of conventional composite-tooling materials, but also competes favourably against metals tools. Note de contenu : - The need for new tooling material in civil transport applications
- Selecting a material solution
- HexMC : a unique material for composite tooling
- Developing a BMI tooling compound
- Small-tool fabrication trials and evaluation
