The question is not new, but the pressure from the latest composite aircraft programmes has forced industry leaders to rethink their approach and seek real cost savings. In the last four years, pattern-matching process control has been gaining ground over statistical process control, for which the added value is inherently limited in low-volume/high-complexity environment. The ability of pattern matching to drive processes to their best performance with no change to the specifications and the control limits, as well as unquestionable cost savings, have already convinced shop floors and engineering offices of the most important aircraft manufacturers in the USA, Canada, Australia, Germany, UK, Spain and France. Note de contenu : - So how to avoid defects without having to modify the process or its control limits ?
- OK, that's nice concept but does it really work ?

These can be distinguished from conventional fibers by a non-circular cross-section. The production of synthetic fibers is made considerably more difficult by the swelling of the polymer melt at the nozzle outlet. As a result, the fiber cross-section diverges from the shaping capillary cross-section. The socalled shape factor is used to characterize the resulting fiber cross-section. In this paper the shape factor criteria overhang-factor (Fo) and circle-factor (Fc) were defined. From these independent criteria a geometry independent shape factor (FITita) can be derived. The development of a semi-automated program enables the evaluation of larger sample sizes in a negligible amount of time and reduces the subjective influence.
