Some of the more important wood properties as they relate to wood finishing are discussed, e.g., growth rate, density, knots, extractives, juvenile wood, grain orientation, and weathering characteristics. Sanded and unsanded units were pretreated with a consolidant or water repellent preservative, finished with an oil- or latex-based paint system, and exposed outdoors near Madison, WI, for five years. Pretreatments were applied to both window sashes (stiles and rails) and sills. In most cases, pretreatment with consolidants was detrimental to the finish. These pretreatments generally caused more flaking and cracking of the paint compared with that of untreated controls or penetrating water-repellent preservatives. The best results were obtained by a combination of sanding and pretreatment with a water-repellent preservative containing copper naphthenate or with tung oil. In this study we applied X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) as a tool to determine if degradation products are observable which can be used to verify the consistency of the field and laboratory degradation processes for acrylic melamine-based clearcoats. This paper discussed an experimental study to develop a two-component water-reducible polyurethane coating using a tertiary aliphatic polyisocyanete crosslinker with dry times, appearance, and reactivity equivalent to a two-component solventborne system. The effects of acrylic polyol monomer composition, glass transition temperature (Tg), and hydroxyl concentration on drytime and ambient cure film performance have been determined. The effects of particle size distribution of the formulated coating on performance were examined. It was found that smaller particle size provides overall improved film propertics, i.e., jaster dry time, increased hardness, and faster development of solvent resistance. The relationship of both acrylic polyol composition and formulation variables on the particle size distribution are discussed. Screening criteria included water partitioning properties, autoignition temperature, distillation profile, and water removal efficiency. A series of resins was also prepared by an identical procedure in order to compare the performance of the DPGDME solvent blends with that of the xylene control. Several of the DPGDME/hydrocarbon blends exhibited desirable partitioning properties and autoignition temperatures >350°C. These blends were close-boiling and when distilled in the presence of water, formed minimum boiling pseudo-heterogeneous azeotropes containing about 50% water. Size exclusion chromatography data showed that resins made with the DPGDME blends had essentially the same molecular weight distribution profile as those made with xylene.
