A reduction in permitted levels of solvent emission during the manufacture and application of paint makes it necessary to develop new raw materials and application techniques. At the same time, it is important to ensure that the required high product quality is retained or further improved for customers.
As a result of joint development work between raw material and coating producers, machinery and equipment manufacturers and customers, new coating systems and application and disposal techniques have already been introduced in the automotive OEM and refinishing paint sectors and are currently finding wider application in general industrial finishing of metal, wood and plastics.Note de contenu : - HIGH-SOLIDS, SOLVENT-CONTAINING TWO-PACK POLYURETHANE PAINTS : solids content - binders

Considerable progress has been made over the course of time. Nitrocellulose lacquers came onto the market in 1925, followed a few years later by alkyd resins. The latter were applied initially by brushing. Is was not until about 1950, the short-oil and nitrocellulose lacquers were replaced increasingly by medium-oil alkyd resins. This paper discussed an experimental study to develop a two-component water-reducible polyurethane coating using a tertiary aliphatic polyisocyanete crosslinker with dry times, appearance, and reactivity equivalent to a two-component solventborne system. The effects of acrylic polyol monomer composition, glass transition temperature (Tg), and hydroxyl concentration on drytime and ambient cure film performance have been determined. The effects of particle size distribution of the formulated coating on performance were examined. It was found that smaller particle size provides overall improved film propertics, i.e., jaster dry time, increased hardness, and faster development of solvent resistance. The relationship of both acrylic polyol composition and formulation variables on the particle size distribution are discussed. Using a blocked arrangement of fractional factorial design matrices, six different independent variables, including the use of different additives, catalysts, as well as solvents at different levels, were examined for their effects on various coating performance parameters, such as gloss, hardness, viscosity, and chemical resistance. Statistical analysis revealed several significant effects of these additives on the coating performances. Most importantly, several two-factor interactions between additives were also found to significantly influence the performance properties of the coating. These interactions could be very difficult to detect using traditional one-at-a-time experimental approaches. The information obtained from this study could be used for designing coating systems with superior performance properties. Of the various approaches taken waterborne two-component polyurethane (2K-PUR) technology has proven to yield the highest quality at low baking temperatures (T<80°C) and the lowest emissions of volatile organic compounds (VOC). Waterborne 2K-PUR coatings require the development of tailor-made raw materials that satisfy the environmental requirements of the coatings industry and yield coating systems of consistent high quality.
