After a theoretical introduction into the contact angle evaluation model, according to Washburn and surface free energy determination, measurements with n-hexane and acetone on six surface modified titanium dioxide pigments and their ranking in terms of wettability (or hydrophilicity) are presented. Dispersion of pigment can be considered as three main precesses being carried out simultaneously. They are mainly :
- Size Reduction
- Pigment Wetting
- Dispersion Stabilization
Today modern dispersing equipments are very much advanced and efficient to get effective size reduction in the lowest possible time. These newer high-energy mills are now slowly replacing conventional ball mills and, to some extent, conventional and mills. THough these modern dispersing equipments are taking care of the size reduction, the wetting and dispersion stabilization is still being handled in a conventional way. Due to the development of newer resins and paint systems in the field of coating technology, wetting and stabilization is getting more and more challengingNote de contenu : - What is pigment wetting ?

As a result, new wetting and dispersing technologies which simultaneously enhance performance and reduce costs have gained in importance. An in-depth discussion of the above crucial issues will be presented. Key words are : wetting vs. dispersing, deflocculation, controlled flocculation, reengineering, pigment concentrates, usage levels, points of addition, formulation hints. New, multifunctional polymeric additives for resin-free pigment concentrates and new additive structures to enhance performance in aqueous and high solids systems will also be presented.
